Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney opened his first official press conference of the season with a clear message: “It’s go time.” After months of preparation and practice, the Tigers are ready to take the field against LSU in a highly anticipated season opener.
Swinney expressed pride in the work his team has put in leading up to this moment, mentioning the challenge that lies ahead in going up against a program led by Brian Kelly. “Coach Kelly’s got a long track record, he’s a great coach. LSU is a very talented football team on both sides of the ball,” Swinney said. “They’ve got elite skill, guys in the trenches, and an elite quarterback. I have a ton of respect for Nussmeier. He’s got great instincts and big-time arm talent.”
The head coach emphasized that LSU’s offensive unit has few, if any, weaknesses. He pointed to their strong screen game, physicality, and depth at skill positions as key strengths. Defensively, LSU also contains veteran leadership at linebacker, making them a tough opponent.
Swinney noted the excitement within his own roster as players continue to get healthy. Offensive lineman Walker Parks has returned to practice, while running back Jay Haynes is still working his way back from a knee injury.
One player who has stood out in camp is sophomore offensive lineman Elyjah Thurmond. Swinney praised his intelligence, versatility, and adaptability. “He’s had a great camp. He’s a smart football player. He’s played five positions in high school and could start anywhere for us,” Swinney said.
When asked about cornerback Avieon Terrell, Swinney described him as a developing player with room to grow in technique, fundamentals, and recognition. He also highlighted wide receiver Tyler Brown, who has continued to build on a strong campaign. “He’s playing fast, he’s healthy, and he’s made plays all camp. He’s been consistent daily at practice,” Swinney said.
Clemson has also focused heavily on special teams after issues in field goal protection last season. Swinney expressed confidence that improvements have been made. “We worked really hard on it. I think the personnel is better. We’ve got our battery back,” he said.
The energy around Clemson’s program is palpable as the team enters game week. Swinney reflected on the unique nature of college football and the intensity it demands. “We’re not normal people,” he said. “You’ve got to be a little not normal to work all year for twelve days. It’s such a unique sport that way. You train so much and play so little. But it never gets old.”
As the Tigers prepare for kickoff, Swinney’s message to his team and fans remains the same: after months of hard work, the wait is finally over.
