Clemson men’s soccer opens its home slate tomorrow night with one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season — the Palmetto Series matchup against rival South Carolina. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Historic Riggs Field, with the Tigers looking to seize early momentum in front of their home crowd.
The Tigers, ranked No. 7 nationally, enter the rivalry fresh off a hard-fought 2–2 draw against No. 11 Indiana in their opener last week. Senior midfielder Nathan Richmond and sophomore standout Ransford Gyan provided the goals, showing Clemson’s ability to generate scoring from both veteran leadership and youthful talent. Head coach Mike Noonan, now in his 16th season, has his squad poised for another run at national contention after claiming NCAA titles in 2021 and 2023.
South Carolina comes into the clash with confidence of its own, riding a season-opening 3–2 victory over the College of Charleston. The Gamecocks bring an unbeaten record into Clemson and will look to play spoiler in one of college soccer’s fiercest rivalries.
This will be the 54th meeting between the programs, with Clemson holding a 34–17–2 advantage in the all-time series. Last year’s contest ended in a 2–2 draw, adding more fuel to a matchup already defined by intensity and tradition. With the Palmetto Series points on the line, both teams will be eager to make an early statement.
For Clemson, the keys will be defensive stability and clinical finishing. The back line and goalkeeper unit will need to remain sharp against a confident Gamecock attack, while Gyan’s ability to create chances in the final third could prove decisive. Playing at Riggs Field provides the Tigers with an edge, as a raucous home crowd will no doubt fuel their energy from the opening whistle.
Tomorrow’s showdown isn’t just about bragging rights — it’s about setting the tone for the season. For Clemson, a victory would affirm their standing among the nation’s elite and spark momentum heading into a demanding ACC schedule.
