Clemson in the RPI

I’ll start posting updated RPI rankings in this thread for the remainder of the season. NCAA’s RPI rankings play a huge factor in determining postseason seeding, including regional and super regional hosts.

After going 1-3 this past week, with a win against a top 40 RPI South Carolina and 3 losses to top-5 RPI Duke, Clemson sits at #20 in the RPI with seven games left on their regular season schedule.

Check out the NCAA website to see the entire list. It is updated daily.

A new week, a new RPI ranking for the Tigers.

After beating Winthrop at home (#213), and taking 2 of 3 from Notre Dame on the road (#61), Clemson now sits at #23 in the NCAA RPI.

After Tuesday, the Tigers had bumped up from #20 to #18, but after the weekend (which was full of late-season upsets yet again) the number fell a bit. Note that any number of factors could cause the ranking to move, including rankings of who you play, what happens around softball on the national stage, as well as how Clemson's former opponents fared. Note that competitive games (high-ranking RPI teams) benefit you if the games are close, even in a loss. Let's take a look at where Clemson's previous opponents currently sit in this version of the RPI rankings, followed by their result against the Tigers:

Competitive Games Played (9-10) -

#4 Georgia (L)

#5 Duke (L x3)

#7 Tennessee (L)

#11 Missouri (L)

#22 Mississippi State (L)

#27 South Carolina (W, L)

#28 Virginia (W, L x2)

#29 Charlotte (W)

#30 Oregon (W)

#36 Liberty (W)

#39 Indiana (W)

#41 Ole Miss (W x2)

#44 Miami (OH) (W)

#49 Wichita State (W)

Non-Competitive Games Played (22-5) -

#61 Notre Dame (L, W x2)

#62 NC State, (L, W x2)

#65 North Carolina (W x3)

#69 Minnesota, (W, L)

#79 Boston College (L, W x2)

#102 Syracuse (W x3)

#105 UConn (W)

#106 Gardner Webb (W)

#133 Longwood (W)

#168 Mercer (W)

#177 Fordham (W)

#191 Missouri State (W)

#195 Furman (L)

#213 Winthrop (W)

#220 UC San Diego (W)

#253 Georgia State (W)

Clemson's final opponent of the regular season is Louisville, which currently sits at #47 in the RPI.

Here's an RPI update of Clemson's status headed into the bye weekend and conference tournament play:

Clemson sits tight around the high-20's, currently at #24 as of April 29th. Mid-weekend, they were bumped up to #22 from #23, but due to some other action around the country, the Tigers will hold there. The upcoming weekend of other action around the diamond will help clear up what Clemson will need to do in the ACC Tournament in Durham starting on May 8th to potentially host another NCAA regional.

As it stands, Clemson will most likely need a couple of wins and to find themselves either in the conference semi-finals or championship game to get themselves firmly in hosting position.

Heading into the postseason, Clemson is #25 in the RPI. However, with a lot of late-season updates this past weekend by some teams on the hosting bubble, Clemson finds itself right in the mix.

They will still need a good showing at the ACC tournament, starting with the revenge game against Virginia on Thursday at 1:30 on campus in Durham.

As of the morning of the 10th, Clemson was up to #19 in the RPI, putting them squarely on the regional hosting bubble.

It will be interesting to see how the poll takes the Tigers’ competitive yet tough loss to #5 Duke earlier today. Update coming tomorrow before the Sunday Selection Show (7pm EST, ESPN2).

There was no update to the RPI between Friday and today, as Clemson still reflects as #19 in the ranking. Duke winning the ACC helps the Tigers, but it is yet to be seen how much. Top SEC opponents that Clemson played earlier in the year didn’t fare well in their own tournament, so that will not reflect in the ranking yet either.

All will be revealed on the Selection Show tonight at 7pm on ESPN2.

Thanks for following along. Excited to roll into post season play!
