Clemson Quarterbacks Vizzina and Reynolds Battle for Tigers’ Starting Job

As fall camps open across the college football landscape, Clemson finds itself at the center of one of the nation’s most closely watched position battles.

USA Today featured the Tigers among the eight “most intriguing” quarterback competitions entering camp and the 2026 season, following a transition period under head coach Dabo Swinney.

“Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has a decision to make after a disappointing 7-6 finish last season and departure of three-year starter Cade Klubnik,” USA Today analyst Austin Curtright wrote.

The competition features a two-man race between fourth-year veteran Christopher Vizzina and true freshman Tait Reynolds. Vizzina opens fall camp holding what Swinney terms the “pole position” at the top of the depth chart, but Reynolds mounted a significant push through spring practices and summer workouts to earn a opportunity to contend for the starting role.

Swinney addressed the competition directly at ACC Football Kickoff, explaining the program’s decision to evaluate internal talent rather than pursuing external options.

“We all know the magnitude of these decisions. We’re not stupid,” Swinney said. “But that’s why we didn’t go get the big shiny object out of the portal. We believe in (Vizzina). But we also believe in Tait. He’s a high-level dude, now. He’s special.”

Veterans and Newcomers on the Depth Chart

Vizzina, a former top-100 recruit, enters 2026 having spent three seasons in Clemson’s system, redshirting in 2023 before serving as Klubnik’s primary backup in 2024 and 2025. Across 14 career games and 238 offensive snaps, Vizzina has completed 61 percent of his passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, while adding 109 rushing yards and a touchdown on 38 carries.

His single career start came on Oct. 18 in a 35-24 loss against SMU at Memorial Stadium, stepping in after Klubnik suffered a sprained ankle the previous week at Boston College. Vizzina finished 29-of-42 for 317 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions, posting a 156.0 pass efficiency rating.

Highlighting the dynamic of the race, Curtright noted how Reynolds altered expectations for the position group:

“There didn’t seem to be much quarterback controversy in Clemson heading into the season until — Dabo Swinney revealed true freshman Tait Reynolds is pushing returning QB Christopher Vizzina for the starting gig.”

Evaluating the two candidates, Curtright added:

“Reynolds, wasn’t a blue-chip recruit (was rated as a three-star recruit by 247Sports’ Composite), but the Queen Creek, Arizona native held offers from a slew of top-tier programs, including Oregon, Oklahoma, Miami and Texas A&M, among others.”

“Vizzina, a former top-100 ranked recruit, has waited his turn at Clemson, redshirting in 2023 before serving as Cade Klubnik’s backup in 2024 and 2025. He started the Tigers’ midseason game against SMU and impressed, passing for 317 yards with three touchdowns, albeit in a 35-24 loss.”

“Vizzina is more experienced and has the trust of the coaching staff, but Reynolds clearly has the talent to make the push.”

High School Production and National Context

Reynolds arrived at Clemson following a standout multi-sport career at Queen Creek High School in Arizona. Although a hamstring injury sidelined him for most of his senior season, Reynolds earned Arizona Cardinals State Player of the Year honors as a junior in 2024, completing 61.9 percent of his passes for 2,238 yards, 22 touchdowns, and five interceptions, while rushing 137 times for 1,426 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Clemson’s internal competition joins a list of high-profile quarterback battles highlighted by USA Today, which includes North Carolina—featuring a four-way race among Billy Edwards, Miles O’Neill, Travis Burgess, and Au’Tori Newkirk—alongside competitions at Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Vanderbilt, Arkansas, and Iowa.

With fall practices underway, the Tigers now evaluate both signal-callers to determine who takes the first snap of the 2026 campaign.
