Tigers Baseball Close Regular Season at Virginia Tech

The USC Upstate loss felt like a fitting summary of Clemson’s season, which is not a compliment.

A year that began with real expectations has turned into a frustrating exercise in missed chances, uneven play, and too many nights where the Tigers simply could not get out of their own way. At 30-23 overall and 9-18 in ACC play, the reality is clear. Clemson is not playing for an NCAA Regional berth anymore unless it can pull off something truly remarkable in the ACC Tournament by winning it.

That is what makes this final regular season series in Blacksburg such an odd one.

Virginia Tech still has something tangible in front of it. The Hokies are fighting for their postseason position and will be playing with urgency at home. Clemson, meanwhile, is playing for pride, momentum, and maybe a little clarity heading into Charlotte. That does not mean the games are meaningless, but the stakes are unquestionably different depending on which dugout you’re looking at.

That disconnect can create strange baseball.

Sometimes teams with nothing left to lose play their cleanest, loosest baseball of the season. Sometimes they look exactly like a team carrying the weight of months of disappointment. Clemson has been hard to predict all year, which is part of what has made this season so maddening for a fan base that expected much, much more.

There are still many good pieces here. Notably, Jarren Purify has brought energy since returning. There have been strong individual pitching performances.  How good has Michael Sharman been all season? The talent has never felt like the issue as much as the inability to consistently string together complete weekends against tough ACC competition.

Now Clemson gets one final shot to show something before the postseason begins.

No one is pretending a strong weekend in Blacksburg suddenly fixes what has been a deeply disappointing season. But heading into a conference tournament where the Tigers need a miracle run, looking competent, focused, and capable of winning meaningful games would at least be a start.

Clemson Briefly

The Bullpen – Talan Bell, Landon Fowler, Nathan Dvorsky, and Justin LeGuernic combined for just 1 earned run in 6 and a third innings pitched.  A tough start for Freshman Dylan Harrison put the Tigers in a hole, but the offense was not great on Tuesday night.

Jarren Purify and Luke Gaffney had two hits each against Upstate.

Tryston McCladdie and Jacob Jarrell combined for all three Clemson RBIs in the 6-3 loss.

Through 53 games, Clemson is hitting .284 as a team and has tallied 88 doubles, 4 triples and 66 home runs while scoring 343 runs, good for an average of 6.5 runs per game.

Clemson will start the same rotation of the last three weekends.

Dane Moehler gets the start on Thursday night. (0-2; 6.41 ERA)

Michael Sharman will start game 2 on Friday afternoon. (6-1; 3.25 ERA)

Aidan Knaak will again start game 3 on Saturday afternoon. (2-6; 5.27 ERA)

Clemson pitchers have a 4.54 ERA with 521 strikeouts and 174 walks.  Opponents are hitting .245 against Tiger pitching.

Final Thought

This weekend feels more like a final check-in than a fresh opportunity.

Clemson is heading to Blacksburg with very little margin left, if there even is a margin, and a lot of disappointment attached to how this season unfolded. A team that was expected to be comfortably in the postseason conversation is instead staring at the likelihood of needing an ACC Tournament run just to have any chance at extending the year.

That is hard to ignore.

Virginia Tech will be playing with some urgency because there is something relatively real on the line for the Hokies. Clemson’s motivation has to come from somewhere else.

Maybe that is pride. Maybe it is playing for those that won’t be on the team next season. Maybe it is simply wanting to look more like the team many thought this could be.

Whatever the reason, these last regular season games still matter because the way you finish sticks with people. Not just fans, but the players and staff heading into an important offseason.

This season has fallen well short of expectations. There is no way around that. But a strong showing in Blacksburg would at least make the trip to Charlotte for the ACC Tournament feel a little less like a formality.

Games are Thursday at 6pm, Friday at 3pm and Saturday at 1pm from English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park in Blacksburg, Virginia.
