Clemson Baseball Head to Spartanburg for Last Mid-Week Contest

Clemson heads into Tuesday night’s matchup against USC Upstate still dealing with the frustration of what could have been over the weekend against No. 11 Florida State. The Tigers were competitive throughout the series, a statement I feel like I’ve overused in this space all season, and put themselves in position to win multiple games (again…), but too many missed opportunities ultimately kept them from taking the weekend. Ugh!

There were stretches where Clemson truly looked like the better team. The pitching staff competed well against one of the ACC’s more balanced lineups especially Freshman Danny Nelson on Saturday, and offensively the Tigers generated enough traffic to put pressure on Florida State throughout the series.  How good has Jarren Purify been since returning to the lineup? The problem was finishing innings. Too many runners were left on base, and too many chances to create separation slipped away at key moments.

Only four more regular season games which starts on Tuesday night in Spartanburg..

The matchup against USC Upstate at Fifth Third Stadium gives Clemson a chance to reset before the final series of conference play. At this point in the season, the Tigers need to win the ACC Tournament in order to play in the postseason, a seemingly large hill to climb.

One positive from the weekend was that Clemson continued to show it can match up physically with quality opponents. The issue has been turning competitive baseball into winning baseball. That has been a recurring theme during ACC play, and it showed up again against Florida State in several big moments.

USC Upstate is plenty good enough to sneak up on the Tigers.  The first meeting in Doug Kingsmore was lopsided in the Tigers favor, but baseball is a funny game.

Finishing the season strong is paramount going into the off-season, an important one for Coach Bakich.

Clemson Briefly

Jarren Purify may be the hottest hitter in the country right now, which begs the question where this team would be if he were not out a month with a hand injury.

Danny Nelson threw four no-hit innings on Saturday in a brilliant performance in relief of Michael Sharman for the lone Tigers victory.

The Battle – There is no question that this season has been a disappointment, but this team could have given up weeks ago, but they haven’t and that is a testament to the coaching staff and the players resolve.  They may not get many breaks, but this team battles all the way to the end.  Loading the bases on Friday night and Tryston McCladdie just misses tying the game is just one example of the compete level this team has every night out.

Through 52 games, Clemson is hitting .284 as a team and has tallied 84 doubles, 4 triples and 66 home runs while scoring 340 runs, good for an average of 6.5 runs per game.

Clemson will start Freshman Dylan Harrison in Spartanburg on Tuesday night.  The freshman right hander has appeared in 11 games, starting 4 of those games.  He’s 2-2 with a 2.51 ERA with 20 strikeouts and 9 walks over 28.2 innings.  Opponents are hitting .223 against Harrison.

Clemson pitchers have a 4.50 ERA with 510 strikeouts and 171 walks.  Opponents are hitting .244 against Tiger pitching.

Final Thought

There is not much left to debate about where Clemson stands heading into the final stretch of the season. Losing two of three against Florida State continued a frustrating pattern that has defined much of this year. The Tigers have been competitive plenty of times against quality opponents, but too often they have failed to capitalize on opportunities that could have changed the direction of the season.

At this point, Clemson is unlikely to make the NCAA Tournament, and that reality is highly disappointing for a program with this level of expectation and talent. There have been flashes throughout the year that suggested this team could turn the corner, but the consistency needed to survive ACC play simply never showed up often enough. Too many close losses, too many missed chances offensively, and too many weekends where Clemson left feeling like it should have won more games.

That does not mean the remainder of the season is meaningless.

For Coach Erik Bakich, these final games are still important in setting the tone moving forward. Clemson needs to show cleaner baseball defensively, better situational hitting, and a level of urgency that has felt inconsistent at times throughout conference play. The foundation of the program still feels solid long term, but fans also expect to see results on the field.

Tuesday night against USC Upstate gives Clemson another opportunity to respond after a frustrating weekend. The Tigers do not need a dramatic turnaround at this point as much as they need to show better execution and finish the season with some level of momentum and pride.

And honestly, after the way this season has unfolded, Clemson fans probably deserve at least a focused midweek performance without unnecessary stress attached to it.  God knows this season has been stressful.

Tuesday at 6pm EST at Fifth Third Bank Park in Downtown Spartanburg.
