Tigers Baseball Hosts Upstate in Last Home Midweek Game of Season

That trip to Charlottesville showed exactly where Clemson (25-16; 6-12 ACC) stands right now.

The Tigers competed well against a top-10 ranked Virginia Cavaliers baseball team on the road and had multiple chances to take the series. Opportunities were there throughout the weekend. Clemson created traffic, put pressure on, and stayed within reach in each game.

They did not finish enough of those chances.

At this point, it feels repetitive to write it. Each week reads the same. Clemson is close. The opportunities are there. The games are within reach. The results have not followed.

Clemson dropped two of three at “The Dish”, including a Sunday game against a short-handed Virginia group. That result stands out. Those are games that have to be closed out if the goal is to move up in the ACC standings.

There are still positives to take from the weekend.

Clemson was not overmatched. The Tigers executed well in stretches, especially on the mound, and played a clean brand of baseball for much of the series. Aidan Knaak was good again on Friday night in a losing effort.  Michael Sharman was outstanding on Saturday and gave Clemson exactly what it needed on the mound. Even Sunday with Dane Moehler getting the ball was effective.  The difference came down to situational execution. Timely hitting and converting opportunities that continue to separate wins from losses.

That has been a consistent theme.

Clemson has shown weekly that it can compete with highly ranked teams. The next step is turning those competitive weekends into series wins, something that has not happened thus far in the season. The margin remains small, but have not gone the Tigers way once this season in conference play.

The focus now shifts back home for the last home mid-week game of the season.

Clemson returns to Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Tuesday night to face USC Upstate Spartans baseball. This is a game that needs to be handled. Upstate was the 4 seed at the Clemson regional a season ago.  They’ve lost some major pieces to bigger paydays…er…transfers, but the lineup is still very, very good.

The opportunities have been there. Converting them is the next step…but seems like it may be too late this season for the Tigers to do so.

Clemson Briefly

Michael Sharman has carried this team week in and week out when he takes the ball.  8 innings of 6 hit baseball with 7 strikeouts.  He is a joy to watch every outing.

Nate Savoie has been a blessing to this team and lineup.  A great kid who has performed well above most of the fans expectations.  Thankfully he is eligible to come back next season for the Tigers.

Jacob Jarrell has been equally as effective at the plate as his fellow catcher.  He hit his 15th home run over the weekend.

Bryce Clavon has played great in centerfield of late.  He made all three put outs in the ninth inning of Saturday’s game to close out the masterful performance by Sharman.  No one is Cam Canarella out there in center, but Clavon has made some tough plays look ordinary a la the former Clemson star.

Through 41 games, Clemson is hitting .289 as a team and has tallied 72 doubles, 3 triples and 55 home runs while scoring 271 runs, good for an average of (still) 6.8 runs per game.

Talan Bell will get the ball for the Tigers in the midweek.  The Sophomore lefty is 0-0 on the season with a 9.78 ERA in 10 appearances.  He has pitched 19.1 innings and has 16 strikeouts and 10 walks.  Opponents are hitting .316 against the young Tiger lefty.

Clemson pitchers have a 4.26 ERA with 412 strikeouts and 132 walks.  Opponents are hitting .230 against Tiger pitching.

Final Thought

Chapel Hill felt like one Clemson let get away.

The Tigers showed they could match up with a top-five North Carolina Tar Heels baseball club, took Friday night, and got a strong effort on the mound Saturday. They were in position to take control of the series and did not finish it. Those are the results that add up over the course of a season.

The midweek response in Charlotte helped slightly.

Clemson went on the road and beat Charlotte 7-3. They scored early, controlled the game, and avoided giving it back late. It was a steady performance and a needed one.

Then came UVA.

Clemson again put itself in position against a top-10 Virginia Cavaliers baseball team at Davenport Field at Disharoon Park. The Tigers created chances throughout the weekend and got a strong outings Friday and Saturday, and really cannot complain about Sunday only allowing 5 runs.  Clemson teams in the past win those games.

The difference was execution in key spots. That decided the series.

At this point, it is an all too familiar pattern. Clemson is competitive each weekend.  Enough to get the fans hopes up. The margin is very small. The results have not gone our way enough.

There is still time to change that…or is there?

The schedule does not ease up, and the ACC standings reflect the many missed chances. Clemson still has a path forward, but it requires turning these close games into wins and carrying that over the remaining (tough) series.

The next opportunity is Tuesday night against a hungry Upstate team who has beaten our Tigers on a few occasions of late.

Clemson returns home to Doug Kingsmore Stadium to face USC Upstate Spartans baseball on Tuesday night. 7:00 PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson.

Go Tigers!
