‘Terrible’: Dabo Swinney Delivers Brutally Honest Assessment of Clemson Offense Ahead of Conference Play

CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney addressed reporters Tuesday ahead of the Tigers’ ACC opener against North Carolina, officially announcing a changing of the guard at quarterback while reviewing roster developments across both sides of the ball.

Swinney confirmed that freshman Tait Reynolds will take over the starting quarterback position from redshirt junior Christopher “CV” Vizzina ahead of Week 3.

“I just met with both of them individually and then collectively as a team,” Swinney said. “You know, don’t have any secrets around here. We’re pretty open book.”

Addressing Vizzina’s health status following an elbow issue last week, Swinney clarified, “Yeah, he’s back. I mean, he’s getting a little better each day. He’s just getting his range of motion. He’s going to be fine, but he’ll just have to wear a little protective thing on his left arm.”

While Swinney reaffirmed his belief in Vizzina—stating, “I hadn’t lost any faith in CV. You know, not at all. I think we got a good situation. I think we can win with either one of them”—he made it clear that Reynolds earned the job through performance. “We’ve got two games, and we just feel like Tait has moved ahead… Tait has passed him, and he’s won the job, so he’s going to be the starter.”

When asked who would step in if Clemson needed a backup Saturday, Swinney quipped, “Yep, yep. I’m not a doctor, and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. But that’s what the doctors say.”

The Physical Profile and the Tim Tebow Comparison

Elaborating on Reynolds’ potential, Swinney praised the dual-sport athlete’s natural gifts and grit. “He’s got a lot of moxie. I mean, he’s, you know, way beyond his years from a physical standpoint, obviously, and he’s just a really gifted thrower.”

Pressed on physical comparisons, Swinney invoked a college football legend: “I recruited Tebow, you know. So physically, you know, he’s just gifted like that… I’m not saying he’s Tim Tebow. All right, please don’t say that and write that.”

Prepping for Bill Belichick and Bobby Petrino

Looking ahead to North Carolina, Swinney praised Tar Heels offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino and head coach Bill Belichick.

“Coach Petrino, I can’t say enough about him. I’ve always had a ton of respect for him as an offensive coach. I just think he’s he’s certainly one of the best,” Swinney noted. On the defensive side, he added, “Coach Belichick’s done a great job in really just getting them to really understand their system, play the techniques and fundamentals of what they’re doing.”

“I still can’t even really believe that Bill Belichick’s at North Carolina. It’s just crazy to me, but he is, and we got to go play against him,” Swinney admitted. “And I consider it, you know, a great honor to be able to, you know, one day tell my kids, man, coached against Bill Belichick. That’s that’s that’s pretty cool.”

Line Play, RBs, and Third-Down Precision

On the offensive line, Swinney expressed confidence in offensive line coach Matt Luke while demanding better execution. “Matt Luke’s been doing this a long time. He ain’t no rookie… I know it seems like we’re a mile away, but we’re really not. We’re a lot closer than you think.” He emphasized that “football punishes you for mistakes, but it rewards you for precision.”

Evaluating freshman running back Gideon Davidson, Swinney described his outing as “Solid, not, you know, not much opportunity in the LSU game… I would say he left meat on the bone, and he’s just got to keep improving.”

Diagnosing Clemson’s early-season third-down struggles, Swinney was blunt: “terrible on first down. Routine, poor precision in what we’re doing is the answer.”

Defensive Line Upgrades and Weather Logistics

Swinney highlighted the spark provided by defensive lineman Devarrick Woods: “Devarrick is a guy that, if you watch the tape, he was a problem. I mean, he’s he’s he’s got really good hands. He’s got violent hands. He’s got good technique, and he’s relentless.”

He also addressed defensive tackle Vic Burley’s return from suspension: “he deserved to come back… dumb, dumb decision on his part… We’ve got some standards around here that that we believe in, and I felt like you know that he needed a he needed a wake up call.”

Regarding recent weather disruptions, Swinney shrugged off rain: “Rain don’t affect nothing. Everybody’s got to play in the rain. Everybody’s getting wet, but lightning, you know, you you gotta you gotta have a delay.”
