Clemson Warns LSU That Using Former Pros Could Breach Game Contract

Clemson has formally put LSU on notice ahead of Saturday night’s season opener in Baton Rouge, warning that utilizing former professional players could constitute a breach of the contract between the two universities.

Clemson general counsel Chip Hood communicated the university’s legal position to LSU’s general counsel on Friday afternoon following a multi-day review of the game contract, according to a report from Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger. The contract includes specific terms governing the participation of ineligible athletes.

Despite issuing the formal warning, Clemson maintains its intent to play Saturday’s matchup at Tiger Stadium and is not seeking financial damages or attempting to cancel the contest.

Legal Disputes and Ineligible Roster Status

The formal notice arrives amid escalating legal battles regarding player eligibility across college football. On Thursday, a Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction opening a pathway for former NFL players to return to college rosters.

LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has actively targeted former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris under the ruling. Both players spent time on NFL rosters during the offseason before seeking a fifth year of collegiate eligibility.

Simultaneously, the Southeastern Conference filed a federal lawsuit aiming to block LSU from fielding former professional athletes, asserting that their participation directly violates conference regulations.

In his correspondence, Hood noted that contractual obligations between Clemson and LSU remain binding regardless of ongoing court proceedings, adding that Clemson “supports the position of the NCAA and our conferences regarding the eligibility of professional athletes returning to play college sports.”

Matchup Outlook

Clemson’s formal communication secures its legal standing under the contest agreement while making clear its opposition to former professional athletes taking the field.

Clemson opens its 2026 regular season against LSU on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with ESPN’s College GameDay broadcasting live from Baton Rouge ahead of kickoff.
