Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney Draws USA Today Comparison to Hugh Freeze

A national college football analyst drew a sharp contrast between Clemson’s past dominance and current trajectory on Tuesday, comparing Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney to former Ole Miss and Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze.

Writing for USA TODAY Sports, college football analyst Blake Toppmeyer argued that Swinney is displaying “serious Hugh Freeze vibes” by leaning on past achievements during media appearances following Clemson’s recent struggles. Freeze was dismissed midway through the 2025 season at Auburn after compiling a 15-19 record over 34 games, following a 39-25 tenure at Ole Miss that ended with his resignation in 2017 after what then-Mississippi athletic director Ross Bjork described as a “pattern of personal misconduct inconsistent with the standards we expect from the leader of our football team.”

Toppmeyer pointed to Swinney’s rhetoric at ACC Kickoff as the core of the comparison, contending that the Clemson head coach frequently brings up his past titles to counter criticism of the program’s recent form.

“It’s impossible to forget how good Dabo Swinney was in his prime,” Toppmeyer said. “It’s impossible to forget, because Dabo won’t let us forget. Swinney used ACC media days as an opportunity to remind everyone of how good he used to be.”

Reflecting on Past Success

During ACC Kickoff in Charlotte, Swinney addressed the narrative surrounding Clemson’s recent trajectory by pointing to the program’s long-term consistency over the past decade and a half.

“We’ve had 15 winning seasons. Thirteen 10-plus win seasons, 14 nine-plus win seasons… and then you have a season like last year, and that’s kind of what everybody wants to focus on, and I get that,” Swinney said.

Speaking to The Athletic, Swinney emphasized his record of championship production relative to his peers across college football.

“We’ve won 11 (conference and national) championships in the last 15 years. I think the next closest coach has six. So, being who I am, that’s served us well,” Swinney said.

Evaluating Clemson’s Trajectory

Despite Swinney’s resume—which includes two national championships and nine ACC titles, featuring two national championship game victories over Alabama—Toppmeyer argued that Clemson’s recent standard has drifted away from its peak years.

“Swinney can keep his golf bag in the garage for now, but the current state of his Clemson program is closer to 2020-25 Auburn than it is to 2015-19 Clemson,” Toppmeyer said.

While critics point to Clemson’s 16 losses over the past five seasons as evidence of a shift, Swinney maintains that his established approach remains the foundation of the program moving forward.
