PICKENS, S.C. – Clemson wide receiver Tristan Smith will be eligible to play during the 2026 college football season after a South Carolina judge granted an injunction Friday in his ongoing legal battle against the NCAA.
Judge Jessica Ann Salvini ruled that the NCAA must immediately recognize Smith as eligible for the 2026-27 season, marking a significant victory for both the veteran receiver and the Clemson football program. The decision temporarily blocks the NCAA from enforcing its previous determination that Smith had exhausted his collegiate eligibility.
The case stems from a lawsuit Smith filed in January after the NCAA denied Clemson’s request for an additional year of eligibility. NCAA officials argued that Smith’s two seasons at Hutchinson Community College in 2022 and 2023 counted toward his eligibility limit, leaving him without remaining seasons following the 2025 campaign.
Smith’s legal team countered that the NCAA had applied its rules inconsistently, pointing to other former junior-college athletes who received additional eligibility waivers under similar circumstances. Judge Salvini agreed there was sufficient legal basis to prevent the NCAA from enforcing its ruling while the broader lawsuit proceeds through the courts.
The ruling is a major boost for Clemson Tigers, who had reserved a roster spot for Smith while awaiting the court’s decision. The 6-foot-5 receiver appeared in all 13 games for Clemson during the 2025 season, recording 24 receptions for 239 yards and a touchdown.
For now, however, one thing is clear: Tristan Smith’s college football career is not over. The veteran receiver is officially cleared to suit up for Clemson in 2026, giving the Tigers an experienced weapon as they prepare for the upcoming season.
