Carter Jones is a Tiger. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound interior offensive lineman from Poquoson, Va., announced his commitment to Clemson on Tuesday, choosing the Tigers over Tennessee, Penn State, and Georgia.

Jones attends Poquoson HS in VA. He is the #16 IOL in the nation and chose the Tigers over Tennessee, Georgia, and PSU.

Jones is the No. 1 ranked interior offensive lineman in Virginia. He moved his commitment date up to May 25, and the 247Sports crystal ball predictions shifted heavily toward Clemson in the days before he announced. The signals were there. They just kept getting louder. Poquoson is a small school on the Virginia coast. Not a national recruiting hotbed. That makes the win more impressive, not less. Clemson identified Jones early, stayed on him through a long process, and closed against three programs that don’t miss often when they want a kid. Georgia. Penn State. Tennessee. That’s the kind of competition that makes a four-star commitment feel like a five-star steal.
Clemson’s 2026 offensive line class was already loaded. Four-star interior linemen Leo Delaney, Carter Scruggs, Chancellor Barclay, and Grant Wise all signed. So did four-star tackle Adam Guthrie and three-star tackle Braden Wilmes. Six offensive linemen in one cycle. Jones extends that pipeline into 2027 and gives the Tigers a 300-pound interior presence who was the top IOL target in his state.
The cupboard was already well-stocked. Now it’s overflowing.
Jones joins running back Gary Walker and wide receiver Jamarin Simmons as the latest high-profile additions to a 2027 class that has picked up serious momentum in the past week. Walker, a four-star running back from Fairburn, Ga., committed on May 20. Simmons, a four-star receiver from Tampa, Fla., followed the same day. Both chose the Tigers over major competition. Both signal that Clemson’s recruiting pitch under offensive coordinator Chad Morris is connecting with skill-position talent in a way that wasn’t happening six months ago. For more on the recent surge, see the 2027 recruiting class roundup.
The 2027 class has 10 players committed and ranks 22nd overall in the Power 4. There’s room to climb. Defensive back Nash Johnson III from Powder Springs, Ga., replaced Tennessee with Clemson on his official visit slate for June 12. Three-star defensive back Bryant Robinson from Frisco, Texas, has Clemson among his final four schools.
The class isn’t done.
Clemson football opens the 2026 season Saturday, Sept. 5, at LSU. Tiger Stadium in early September is hostile territory for any visiting team, let alone one integrating a wave of new talent via the transfer portal. The full 2026 schedule includes seven home games in Death Valley.
Jones won’t be on the field for that game. He won’t enroll for another year. But the recruiting momentum Clemson is carrying into the fall matters for the next cycle the same way last year’s portal haul matters for this one.
The Tigers won’t stop with Jones. They can’t afford to. The next cycle starts the day the last one ends, and right now Clemson is winning more of those cycles than it’s losing.
