Clemson added a piece to its 2027 recruiting class when composite four-star safety Jarrell Chandler committed to the Tigers over Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Miami.
Chandler is listed at 6-3 and 210 pounds — No. 55 at 247Sports, but No. 24 on the Composite scale. That gap isn’t noise. It means the scouts who watched him most disagreed with the algorithm, and in recruiting, the Composite usually wins that argument.
Clemson has had 8 commits in 12 days starting with Jarrell Chandler on the 18th. The craziest part is that there’s still two days left of the OV weekend and I highly doubt they are finished picking up commits from there.

Calling this a heater is an understatement.
Tennessee was the frontrunner most of the spring. Chandler made four trips to Knoxville and was one of their top in-state targets in the 2027 class. The Vols were pushing hard, and for a while it looked like they’d close it. Virginia Tech was circling an official visit. Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Alabama and Florida all threw in late offers as his stock climbed.
Then Clemson stepped in and moved fast.
A campus trip was set for next weekend to open his official visit window — now it’ll be the only one he takes this summer. The Tigers didn’t give anyone else a chance to get in the building.
He was last on campus in early March for the program’s Elite Retreat. Whatever happened that weekend stuck. There’s a reason Clemson schedules those retreats in March — it’s early enough to shape the decision before the summer visit circuit kicks in and other programs start throwing resources at a kid. With Chandler, it worked exactly the way the staff drew it up.
At 6-3 and 210 pounds, Chandler has the frame to play safety at any level. Size like that doesn’t come along at the position often in high school recruiting. Most four-star safeties are 6-0, 185 and still filling out. Chandler is already built. That’s part of why the broader recruiting industry — the services that aggregate across multiple evaluators — rank him nearly 30 spots higher than 247Sports does on its own. When scouts disagree that sharply, the answer is usually somewhere between both numbers, and both numbers are good.
Clemson locked this up before the summer got busy on purpose. The staff wanted his recruitment closed before Alabama or Florida could schedule visits and complicate things. They didn’t let it get complicated. That push tells you exactly how the coaching staff views Chandler — not as a depth piece, but as someone they needed to secure early and keep off the board.
He’s the latest in a run of defensive back commits for the Tigers. The 2027 class is quietly building something real in the secondary, and Chandler’s profile fits what Clemson has historically done at safety — long, athletic, physical enough to play near the line but rangy enough to cover ground in space. The Tigers have developed that type into NFL draft picks before. They’re betting they can do it again.
Tennessee held firm through the whole process. None of it mattered.
When Chandler gets to Death Valley three years from now, the Vols will remember exactly what happened here. So will everyone else who offered late and watched Clemson close the door first.
