Tuesday night was handled the way it needed to be.
Clemson took care of USC Upstate Spartans baseball at Doug Kingsmore Stadium and moved to 26-16 overall, 6-12 in ACC play. It was a straightforward result. They got ahead, stayed in control, and finished it without much stress. That has not always been the case this season, so it matters when it looks that way.
Now the setting changes again.
Clemson heads to Louisville for a three-game series against the Louisville Cardinals baseball at Jim Patterson Stadium. Louisville comes in at 23-18 overall and 7-11 in the ACC. The record is not overwhelming, but this is still a capable club, especially at home.
The situation for Clemson is clear.

The Tigers have put themselves in position most weekends. They have not closed enough of them. Louisville has had a similar fate as the Tigers in recent conference weekends. The standings for both teams reflect that. At 6-12 and 7-11 in the league respectively, there is little room left to stay in the same pattern. Something has to give this weekend. Hoping it’s the Tigers that can take the series on the road.
There’s not a ton of season left, but no time like the present to win a series for the Tigers.
Clemson Briefly
Luke Gaffney had a day on Tuesday night at DKS. He went 2-5 with 5 of the 7 RBIs on the night. It was really nice to see Gaffney have one of his best nights of the year at the plate.
Jacob Jarrell and Tryston McCladdie had the other RBIs for the Tigers on Tuesday night.
Talan Bell and Justin LeGuernic were solid at the top of the game. Combined went 5 innings allowing just 1 run with two hits. LeGuernic had three walks which ultimately led him to be taken out, but showed signs of good stuff, especially early in his outing.
Through 42 games, Clemson is hitting .287 as a team and has tallied 74 doubles, 3 triples and 56 home runs while scoring 278 runs, good for an average of 6.6 runs per game.
Aidan Knaak will get the ball Friday night. The junior righty is 2-4 on the season with a 5.02 ERA over 9 starts. He’s pitched 43 innings, racking up 70 strikeouts to only 17 walks. Opponents are hitting .256 against him.
Michael Sharman has been announced for his normal Game 2 start. The lefty “ace” is 5-1 on the season with a 2.70 ERA over 10 starts. 56.2 innings pitched with 55 strikeouts and only 10 walks. Opponents are hitting .197 against him.
Clemson and Louisville both have not announced a starter for Sunday.
Clemson pitchers have a 4.18 ERA with 424 strikeouts and 136 walks. Opponents are hitting .227 against Tiger pitching.

Louisville is led offensively by Sophomore 1B Tague Davis. The national leader in home runs with 25, coming off a weekend where he hit 5 long balls. Final Thought
There are a lot of similarities on both sides this weekend.
Clemson and the Louisville Cardinals baseball have both spent the season in the same spot. Competitive in ACC play, in position to win series, and unable to close them out. For two programs that expect to be near the top of the league every year, the results have fallen short.
That is what makes this series matter.
Both teams are looking for something they have not done consistently all season. Finish a weekend. Take control when the opportunity is there. Follow through over three games.
The margin has been small for both. The standings reflect it.
This weekend comes down to execution more than anything else. One of these teams is going to break that pattern.
Friday at 6:00 PM, Saturday at 7:00 PM, and Sunday at 2:00 PM at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville.
Go Tigers!
