Tigers Baseball to Face Stanford This Weekend in California

Not much to spin here for Clemson Baseball (19-11 overall; 2-7 ACC).

The Tigers were run-ruled by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in a 15-4 loss Wednesday night in Charlotte. It got away early and never settled down. Wake Forest put pressure on from the start, and Clemson did not have an answer on the mound or a way to slow the pace of the game.

The pitching staff struggled to finish innings. Free passes and extended at bats turned into big numbers. Wake Forest capitalized and created separation before Clemson could reset.

Offensively, Clemson showed flashes but not enough to keep up. There were a few swings that produced runs, but too many empty trips in between. Once the deficit grew, the margin for error disappeared.

It is a different tone from earlier in the season. This is not about one inning or one bounce. The game moved in one direction.

Now the focus shifts west.

Clemson heads to California for a three game series against Stanford Cardinal baseball, a club sitting at 13-13 overall and 3-6 in ACC play. It is another conference test, even with the change in setting.

The situation is clear. Clemson needs to play cleaner baseball across the board. That starts on the mound with limiting free baserunners and continues defensively with routine execution. At the plate, it is about sustaining pressure instead of short bursts.

There is not much time to sit on this one. The next series starts tonight in California.

Clemson Briefly

Bryce Clavon has been a huge bright-spot since returning to the lineup.  The Georgia transfer is getting on base a ton for the Tigers, and has also come up big in big spots.  He’s raised his average to .289 on the season and truly is one of the few hitters in this order that has continually produced during this poor run of overall team play.

Tryston McCladdie still leads the team in average at .354 on the year.

Jacob Jarrell leads the team with 12 home runs, while Nate Savoie is second on the team with 10 but leads the team with 35 RBIs.

Through 30 games, Clemson is hitting .292 as a team and has tallied 50 doubles, 2 triple and 40 home runs while scoring 202 runs, good for an average of 6.7 runs per game.

Aidan Knaak, Michael Sharman and Drew Titsworth will get the ball to start the respective weekend games.

Clemson pitchers have a 4.15 ERA with 299 strikeouts and 91 walks.  Opponents are hitting a paltry .221 against Tiger pitching, a true strong suit outside of Wednesday night.

Final Thought

Clemson has now dropped 9 of its last 15 after the loss to Wake Forest. The talent is still there. The results have not matched it often enough over the past two weeks.

Coach Bakich has been clear about the standard. The players know it too. At this point, it is about execution. Limiting free bases, finishing innings on the mound, and getting timely hits when chances show up. Those have been the separating factors.

The trip to face Stanford Cardinal baseball is not a reset button. It is another opportunity against a conference opponent. Stanford sits at 13-13 overall and 3-6 in ACC play. There will be chances there. Clemson has to take them.

This group is too experienced to let things drift much longer. The schedule is not easing up, and neither is the competition.

First pitch is 9:05PM EST on Friday, 5:05PM EST on Saturday, and 4:05PM EST on Sunday at Sunken Diamond on the campus of Stanford.
