Clemson football is at a crossroads. For real this time.
While there has been much discussion in the past several years about whether head coach Dabo Swinney has let the game pass him by, or whether he can win at a high level with the modern state of the sport, Saturday’s spring game will be the first eye test for fans and national pundits alike.

Make no mistake, not much will be shown. But it should be enough to give everyone a small barometer of what the Tigers are working with as the 2026 season is just over five months away. Coming off a 7-6 season, the worst for Clemson football in over 15 years, even Swinney understands the pressure. Clemson football has to win and win now.
Not the least of Clemson’s concerns is the quarterback position. With Cade Klubnik departed for the NFL, the Tigers are green at the most important position on the field. Christopher Vizzina is the assumed starter, and he did start two games with mixed results in 2025, but can he lead the offense for an entire season?
Clemson QB Christopher Vizzina Highlights vs. SMU
Last season’s third string QB, Chris Denson, is a dynamic athlete but has limited snaps at the college level. True freshman Tait Reynolds has drawn strong reviews during the course of spring practice, but how much he factors into Clemson football’s plans is yet to be seen.
Perhaps we get a good look at Denson and Reynolds on Saturday.
While quarterback carries major question marks, wide receiver is a position of strength for the Tigers; perhaps the best position group on the team with the likes of T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco returning along with Tyler Brown and others.
Running back will be a point of interest. Can former 5-star Gideon Davidson take another leap toward stardom as a sophomore? Can the addition of SMU transfer Chris Johnson Jr. electrify the offense with his blazing speed? The talent resides in both and, if properly utilized by offensive coordinator Chad Morris, can be a potent cog in the offense.
The offensive line, however, is…going to be an interesting collection of unknowns. With much of last year’s line gone, and with injuries in the offseason, the group is thin and inexperienced at best and could be the weakest link on offense at worst. Offensive line play will be paramount with protecting an inexperienced quarterback being of the highest priority.
Defensively, it is much the same. An extremely young unit, with talent, but with myriad unknown factors at play. Defensive line, linebacker, and the secondary all have positions up for grabs. During media sessions, defensive coordinator Tom Allen has stated how well Kobe McCloud has acquitted himself at linebacker, and expects him to start alongside Sammy Brown.
Along the line, where much attrition has taken place, Amare Adams is a player who needs to take the next step as a true sophomore. Along with multiple defensive transfers, the defense is a collective unit with a lot to prove and all eyes will be anxiously awaiting to see the results.
While Saturday’s spring game is nowhere close to the be all end all predictor of the season for Clemson football, it is a good opportunity to show an initial hand. Not all in, but some eye candy that sets up a bluff. If the rest of college football believes that Clemson football is a has-been in the upper echelon of the sport, this spring game is the first small opportunity to prove them wrong.
Clemson football is, indeed, at a crossroads in 2026. Perhaps they take the right turn this time.
