One Inning swings No. 23 Clemson softball at Charlotte

No. 23 Clemson softball fell to Charlotte 8-3 at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium on February 18th, dropping to 6-5 on the season while the 49ers improved to 9-2.

The Tigers looked sharp out of the gate. Jaylin Brockenbrough helped Clemson strike first in the opening frame as the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, immediately putting pressure on the home side. Clemson continued to control the pace early, playing clean defense and limiting Charlotte’s chances through the first three innings.

That steady start carried into the fourth. Clemson tacked on another run to extend its lead to 3-0, and for a moment, it felt like the Tigers were positioned to take control on the road.

Then everything flipped.

Charlotte had 11 at-bats at the plate in the bottom of the fourth and exploded for six runs, completely swinging the game’s momentum. Jenna Lord delivered the defining blow of the night, launching a three-run home run that energized the crowd and put Charlotte firmly in front. Teagan Ritchie and Olivia Williams added timely hits in the inning as the 49ers turned a quiet night into a sudden offensive surge.

From that point forward, Clemson was playing uphill.

The Tigers continued to battle, but high-caliber offense was hard to find. Mac Pavesi led Clemson at the plate, finishing 2-for-4, while Taylor Pipkins also recorded two hits. Sarah Breaux drove in a run, but Clemson left six runners on base and struggled to string together quality at-bats once Charlotte seized control.

In the circle, Sierra Maness was charged with the loss after allowing six earned runs across 3.2 innings. Abby Dunning and Keira Crosby combined to provide scoreless relief down the stretch, giving Clemson a chance to stay within reach, but the early damage proved too much to overcome.

Charlotte’s Taylor Jones earned the win after tossing four innings and limiting Clemson to three runs. Brooke Bowling shut the door over the final three frames, keeping the Tigers off the board late.

Clemson actually out-hit Charlotte through the first three innings. But softball games often hinge on moments, not margins. The Tigers are back in action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Lipscomb to begin the Clemson Classic.
