RJ Godfrey, Tigers Cruise Past Alabama A/M

RJ Godfrey and the Clemson Tigers extend their win streak with 92-56 victory

It’s the calm before the storm, as Clemson basketball faced off against Alabama A/M before their next two matchups against top ten opponents Alabama and BYU. The Tigers were able to capture their fourth straight victory, making them 6-0 at home and 7-1 on the year. They have won nine straight in LittleJohn colosseum, dating back to last season. Clemson has been able to stack important victories throughout the season, with a much tougher schedule coming up as we head into December.

Everybody ate tonight for the Tigers, as a dozen different players logged baskets throughout the match. The scoring was spread out evenly, as no player eclipsed even fifteen points despite the Tigers breaking 90 total points.

With Clemson leading 30-7 ten minutes in and 52-22 at the end of the first half, the starters were able to rest a majority of the game. The Tigers bench outscored the starters 49-43, led by a 12-7-3 from Junior Forward Carter Welling. Welling was most impressive from the free throw line, shooting a perfect 8/8. RJ Godfrey notched ten points and eight rebounds, going 4/7. His ten points marked his 6th game in double figures, just eight games into the season. As a unit, Clemson shot 55% from from the field and 35% from three, with Jestin Porter accumulating most of the volume, going 2/6 from beyond the arc. Porter was electric in the first half, scoring thirteen points in the first period. After the game, Brownell commented on the Middle Tennesse State transfer, saying “He’s a shot maker. We want him to be aggressive.” Porter clearly gets the memo, rightfully leading the team in three point attempts.

After the game, Brownell praised the Tigers ability to perform over a holiday weekend, stating “I thought our team showed maturity, being ready to play tonight in a different situation.” With it being just a day after thanksgiving, and most of the students choosing to be at home with their families rather than attending the game, it would have been easy for the Tigers to just phone it in and squeak away with a win behind subpar play. However, they came out firing, treating this matchup like the most important one of the season. That energy paid dividends with such a convincing defeat.

Clemson was able to break ninety points for the third time this season, something they were only able to do once during their 2024-25 campaign. Despite Alabama A/M scoring 56, most of their scoring came against depth pieces for the Tigers, as A/M had failed to score forty points with just ten minutes remaining in the game.

With a slew of powerful out of conference opponents coming before conference play, this was Clemson’s last matchup against an unassuming smaller school. It was nice to see the Tigers take care of business so handily, and let’s hope they carry that positive momentum to Birmingham. Clemson will face off at Alabama on December 3rd at 7:15. It’s a game that will reveal a lot about the potential of these Tigers, and lets hope they can pull through and exceed expectations this season.
