The Tigers will host Western Michigan in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, November 20th at 6 p.m. inside Historic Riggs Field, setting up a matchup that’s far more interesting than the records might suggest.
Clemson enters the tournament at 8–5–3, a season filled with flashes of elite quality and stretches of frustration that made their résumé tougher to pin down. But when this team is on, they’re genuinely dangerous — and two players make that crystal clear every single match.
Clemson’s Difference-Makers
Ransford Gyan remains the tiny motor of the attack and one of the ACC’s most electric creators. His 8 goals and 8 assists don’t just lead Clemson — they define Clemson’s identity. When he’s cooking, the Tigers look like a team nobody wants to draw in November.
Alongside him, Nathan Richmond has quietly put together one of the most productive seasons of his career: 7 goals and 5 assists, with a knack for showing up at the biggest moments. Together, the two form one of the most balanced dynamic duos in the field.
Who Is Western Michigan?
The Broncos arrive at Riggs with a 7–9–4 record, but they’re not a team Clemson can afford to look past. Their standout force is Jonathan Stout, a 5’10” senior forward from Grand Rapids who has put up 5 goals this season — and carries the “big-moment striker” reputation that can flip a tournament game instantly.
Western Michigan plays with nothing to lose and everything to prove. Clemson plays with something more difficult: expectation.
The Bottom Line
If Clemson cleans up the self-inflicted mistakes that have haunted them throughout the season, they’re the better team — and they have the firepower to show it. But the NCAA Tournament has no mercy for slow starts or lapses in focus.
Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday, November 20th.
Postseason soccer has at least one more appearance at Riggs this year.
And Clemson has a chance to rewrite the story of its season.
