This game was not on the offense.
The Tigers put up 45 points of turnover free football, dominating both on the ground and in the air. Adam Randall scored two touchdowns on 89 yards rushing. Cade Klubnik passed for 385 yards and two touchdowns. TJ Moore turned two catches into 92 yards and a touchdown. Tristian Smith performed well in his debut, with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Despite impressive outings all around the offense, Williams stood out among his peers. The Junior caught ten passes on twelve targets for 142 yards and a touchdown. Despite his efforts, 45 points wasn’t enough this Saturday, and the Tigers fell to 3-5.
A month ago against Syracuse, Dabo was emotional following a disapointing loss to the Syracuse Orange. Sammy Brown and Cade were distraught after, and morale overall was low. However, that defeat pales in comparison to the loss on Saturday.
Dabo pointed to a defeated energy from players after the game; “That’s one of the worst locker rooms I’ve been apart of.” Klubnik and Woodaz fought back tears during their postgame, often pausing mid sentence to get themselves together. Antonio was fully emotional, looking defeated after such an incredible performance led to a disappointing outcome.
When asked about Cade, Antonio showed clear respect for the signal caller; “I saw a guy battling out there for his team. He’s the best player we got, put the team on his back. He’s gritty, and I respect the hell out of that.”
Klubnik and Williams have been focal points of the offense for the past three seasons, entering this year with lofty expectations. With just four games remaining, their collegiate careers are ending without the success either player hoped for, despite talented play from each. This game was reflective of the entire disappointing season, which seemed to weigh heavily on Williams.
No matter how the final four games go, this season is not going to live up to expectations. Chances of a conference championship or a playoff appearance are long gone, making it difficult for players to stay focused. Williams was asked about this issue, he showed his unwavering commitment to both the team as well as the sport itself; “I keep my head up, I have respect for the game. We don’t let the record dictate how we practice.” There’s no doubt that Williams will continue to be committed to this team through the end of the season. If the offense continues to play this well, the defense will follow, and this team can still finish strong.
As one of the better talents in the ACC, it’s likely Williams has some kind of professional career playing football. However, you never know, and whether Williams plays ten more seasons or ten more quarters of football, his time wearing a Clemson jersey are limited. Let’s hope he can continue to play at a high level, and find team success reflective to his individual achievement.
