Clemson-Georgia Tech carries heavy stakes in ACC, CFP pictures

Saturday afternoon’s Clemson-Georgia Tech noon kickoff inside Bobby Dodd Stadium carries plenty of weight with the College Football Playoff picture.

On paper, it’s a road game against an unranked, 2-0 opponent. But in reality, the stakes of the matchup are much larger. No. 12 Clemson (1-1) needs a win to start off ACC play 1-0, as do the Yellow Jackets (2-0). However, the real story lies in the schedules that follow for both teams.

Those scheduling dynamics have Georgia Tech favored in their other seven conference games, while avoiding quality opponents No. 10 Florida State, SMU, and Louisville. The Tigers face all three teams, including a tricky Friday night trip to battle the Cardinals in November. A loss in Atlanta would hand the Yellow Jackets an all-important tiebreaker and leave Clemson fighting uphill in the standings.

The Tigers’ margin of error could be slim based on last season. Clemson recovered from losses to No. 1 Georgia in their opener, and a surprising home defeat to 9-win Louisville. With the team firmly in CFP position, their path required a shocking upset. Syracuse took down No. 6 Miami, allowing Dabo Swinney’s team to back-door their way to Charlotte, and eventually, the CFP.

However, that path required good fortune that Clemson can’t count on again. Dropping an early-season game at Georgia Tech could take the Tigers’ CFP hopes out of their own hands. Even if Clemson won out after a loss in Atlanta, they could still miss the ACC Championship Game via the head-to-head tiebreaker with GT.

At that point, their CFP hopes would depend on how they stack up against 2-and 3-loss SEC and Big Ten contenders. Miami in 2024 can be seen as a cautionary tale. The Hurricanes amassed a 10-2 record, but were not selected for an at-large spot. The committee ruled in favor of other 10-2 teams with better resumes (Ohio State and Tennessee) over Miami.

The point is clear: with the ACC’s lack of depth when compared to the SEC and Big Ten, a 10-2 Clemson team could possibly be left out of the 12-team field in favor of another two-loss team that has a better body of work.

These stakes make Saturday as close to a must-win as a September game can be in the CFP era. Clemson can add a quality road victory to their resume, while Georgia Tech will aim for another signature win under head coach Brent Key. His teams are 6-1 against ranked opponents, and another upset could vault the Jackets firmly into the national picture.
