Clemson Softball Dominates USC Upstate 10-2 in Convincing Victory

Clemson softball, ranked #13 nationally, secured a decisive 10-2 victory over USC Upstate on Friday at McWhorter Stadium. The Tigers, now ranked 11th in another poll, improved their record as pitcher Brooke McCubbin earned her 17th win of the season against 5 losses.

The Tigers’ offense came alive in the middle innings, scoring 9 runs between the third and fifth frames to pull away from the Spartans. After a scoreless first inning, Clemson took control with consistent hitting throughout their lineup, collecting 10 hits and drawing 4 walks.

Collins led the offensive charge for Clemson, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and a double. The shortstop’s production included a crucial two-RBI double to center field in the fifth inning that extended the Tigers’ lead. Johnson added significant power with a three-run home run in the fourth inning that scored Pipkins and Collins, helping to break the game open.

USC Upstate briefly challenged in the third inning when Deal doubled to right center to drive in Thomas, followed by Shaw’s sacrifice fly that scored Deal, giving the Spartans their only two runs of the contest. Clemson pitcher Basinger worked 2.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 earned runs before McCubbin entered to shut down the Spartans’ offense.

McCubbin proved effective in relief, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just 3 hits and walking one. The Tigers’ pitching staff combined for a solid performance that limited USC Upstate to 2 runs on 9 hits.

The fifth inning proved decisive as Clemson scored 5 runs, chasing USC Upstate starter Drerup from the game. The Tigers capitalized on timely hitting, including RBI doubles from Vieira and Pipkins, along with run-scoring hits from Cintron and Collins.

This victory continues Clemson’s strong season as they maintain their position among the nation’s elite softball programs. The Tigers demonstrated their offensive capabilities and pitching depth in what became a comfortable win against a USC Upstate team.

Clemson will meet Northwestern at Saturday at 1:30.
