Stanford avoids sweep as Clemson drops game three, 11-6

Clemson fell short of a series sweep against Stanford, losing game three 11-6 after a rough fifth inning allowed the Cardinal to break the game wide open. Stanford (19-14, 6-12 ACC) tallied 14 hits as Clemson’s eight game win streak was snapped. Clemson fell to 33-6, 11-4 in ACC play.

B.J. Bailey struggled in his start, pitching four innings and allowing seven earned runs. Stanford got out to an early three-run lead in the first inning due to back-to-back doubles and a two-run homer from Jimmy Nati. Clemson stole a run back in the bottom of the first with consecutive singles from Cam Cannrella and Jarren Purify.

Jacob Jarrell led off the bottom of the second with a double and scored from Jack Crighton’s single to right. Andrew Ciufo’s sacrifice fly brought home Crighton to tie the game, 3-3.

Trevor Haskins gave Stanford the lead back in the fourth inning courtesy of a two-run shot that was just the beginning of the Cardinal’s rally that lasted into the next inning. Four consecutive Stanford batters reached to start the fifth inning, driving in two runs. Hudson Lee, who took the mound to relieve Bailey after the first two reached, struck out two batters in hopes to end the inning. However, three straight singles pushed three more runs across the board for Stanford and drove Lee from the game as well.

Clemson’s bats weren’t dead yet, as they collected three hits to drive in two more runs of their own, narrowing the score 10-5. Cannarella doubled and scored on Purify’s single. Purify then scored when Collin Priest singled up the middle. The Tigers left one on base in the fifth as Jarrell popped up to end the inning.

The Tigers picked up another run in the seventh due to a wild pitch, but that would end up being their last run of the game. Stanford made up for that run in the ninth with Brandon Larson’s solo shot that put the Tigers away and prevented the sweep.

Bailey suffered his first loss of the season as Stanford’s Matt Scott picked up his fifth win.
