The Clemson Softball team delivered a commanding performance against the No. 14/16 Duke Blue Devils, securing a 12-4 run-rule victory in just five innings at their home field in Clemson, S.C. This win not only marked an exceptional start to their ACC play but also extended Clemson’s winning streak to an impressive 15 games, a feat not achieved since 2023. With this victory, the Tigers improved their season record to 18-6, while Duke fell to 15-7.
Clemson’s dominance was evident throughout the match, with the freshman class playing a pivotal role in the triumph. Collectively, the freshmen accounted for six of the Tigers’ nine hits, seven of their ten RBIs, and six of their twelve runs. Marian Collins emerged as a standout player, finishing the game with a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, including three RBIs. Ava Wilson also made significant contributions with a hit that drove in three RBIs. Meanwhile, Macey Cintron and Sam Minish displayed strong plate discipline, combining for multiple runs and crucial hits that propelled the Tiger offense.
The opening innings showcased a tactical battle, as both teams exchanged outs and strikeouts. Senior pitcher Reese Basinger set the tone for Clemson’s defense by striking out two of Duke’s top batters in the first inning, ultimately finishing the game with four strikeouts and improving her personal record to 6-2. Duke’s leadoff batter reached base in the second inning, but relentless defense from Clemson ensured the Blue Devils left her stranded, underlining the Tigers’ focus and intensity on the field.
Clemson finally broke through in the bottom of the second inning, turning the pressure onto Duke. After some stirring moments that included a wild pitch advancing runners, Collins stepped up with a crucial double that drove in two runs, propelling Clemson to a 2-0 lead. The Tigers continued to build momentum as junior Jamison Brockenbrough’s tenacious battle at the plate culminated in a walk, further boosting their scoring potential.
As excitement grew, the Tigers went on to score four runs in the third inning, pushing their lead to an impressive 8-0. Errors from the Blue Devils allowed Clemson to capitalize, culminating in back-to-back errors that saw the Tigers add three runs, with Collins again providing a key double.
Despite this dominant offensive display, the Blue Devils began to emerge in the fourth inning, scoring four runs, including two solo home runs. However, Clemson showcased their resilience, responding vigorously in the bottom half of the inning with another four runs of their own, highlighted by a double off the wall from Minish that drove in key runs and reinforced the Tigers’ offensive depth.
The game concluded with Duke’s attempts to avoid the run-rule falling short, as a foul fly was caught by Kylee Johnson, sealing Clemson’s emphatic victory at 12-4.
As both teams move forward, Clemson will aim to capitalize on their winning streak as they prepare to face Duke again in the continuation of the series on Saturday, March 8, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on ACCNX. This matchup will be crucial not only for the continuation of the Tigers’ streak but also for setting the tone for the rest of the ACC season. Meanwhile, Duke will seek to regroup and adjust their strategy, looking to rebound from this disappointing defeat and showcase their competitive spirit in the next game.
Clemson has established itself not just as a formidable team in the ACC, but also as a key contender on the national stage, with young talents stepping up and contributing to a dynamic team performance. Coach Rittman will undoubtedly look to harness this momentum as they continue to challenge the upper echelons of collegiate softball, keeping an eye towards postseason implications. With continued focus and effort, the Tigers are poised for a remarkable season ahead.
