Clemson baseball has long demonstrated patriotism at its events, and because of his personal ties to the military, head coach Erik Bakich has made it a point to ensure proper respect is given during the national anthem. The team has now introduced a new tradition that directly honors military veterans, offering them the recognition they often don’t receive.
The media spotlighted the gesture during Clemson’s game against North Carolina A&T this past weekend when every player ran out from the dugout to greet and shake hands with veterans in the stands.

“Our players just understand they get to play baseball in a free country, and that wouldn’t be possible without those servicemen and women who protect and defend that freedom.”
Coach Bakich said of the tradition
Throughout the game, the stadium’s speaker system invites veterans in attendance to stand and be recognized for their bravery, prompting players to personally acknowledge them. As this unfolds, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless America” plays in the background, enhancing the emotional significance of the moment.
Bakich mentioned that the tradition has led to some deeply emotional moments.

“I think there’s been some tear-jerking moments for some of them, especially those who maybe haven’t always received the warmest welcome,” he said. “But to know in our program and at our games, they’re going to be recognized like they should.”
