Tigers Stick the Landing in ACC Opener

The Clemson gymnastics team earned its first ACC win Friday, defeating Pitt 195.500-195.100 behind a season-individual-high 9.850 score from Sierra Church on beam. The Tigers had their best scores of the season on both beam and vault to secure the win

On bars, Lilly Lippeatt began the day with a 9.575, followed by a career-high 9.825 from Takoda Berry. Eve Jackson followed those with a 9.75 and 9.80, then Rebecca Wells and Quinn Kuhl with a 9.70 and 9.75. 

After the first rotation, Clemson tailed Pitt 48.825-48.875.

Tara Walsh started the Tigers off on vault by sticking her Yurchenko Full, a skill with a 9.95 Start Value, and earning a 9.75. Trinity Brown matched her score from last weekend with a 9.825 on her Yurchenko Full (9.95 SV). Quinn Kuhl followed with a 9.800 on her Yurchenko Full (9.95 SV), and a 9.75 from Madison Minner on her Tucked Yurchenko 1.5 (10.0 SV). On her first vault of the season, Eve Jackson earned a 9.825 with a 10.0 SV Yurchenko 1.5. Maggie Holman concluded vault by achieving a career high 9.825 on her Front Handspring Pike Half (10.0 SV).

At halftime, Clemson led 97.850-97.525.

Lilly Lippeatt led off once again for the Tigers, but from the floor, earning a 9.675. Trinity Brown followed with a 9.75, along with another 9.75 from Madison Minner. Molly Arnold scored a 9.70 on her routine, then a 9.775 from Eve Jackson. In the final floor routine of the night, Brie Clark scored a 9.775, but a 0.1 deduction was applied for stepping out of bounds on her first pass, bringing her final score to 9.675.

Clemson still led Pitt 146.500-146.325 with one rotation remaining. 

For the third time that night, Lilly Lippeatt opened the Tigers’ beam lineup with a stuck landing, earning a 9.750, followed by freshman Danika Nielson earning a 9.80. Sierra Church achieved the Tiger’s highest individual score of the season next with a 9.85. Kielyn McCright followed with a 9.725, and Quinn Kuhl concluded the night with a 9.825 to give the Tigers a final score of 48.950 on beam.

Clemson secured a 195.500-195.150 victory in their first ACC meet of the season.

Next up, the Tigers remain on the road and head west to face the newest member of the ACC in Cal. The teams go head to head on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 5:00 p.m. before Clemson makes their home debut Jan. 31 at LittleJohn Coliseum.
