Clemson forward Ian Schieffelin has been named the ACC and USBWA Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. The honor comes after Schieffelin averaged 13.0 points, 16.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the Tigers’ wins over No. 4 Kentucky and at Miami last week.
Schieffelin, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, recorded double-doubles in both games. The junior had 11 points, a career-high 20 rebounds and 4 assists in Clemson’s upset victory over Kentucky. He followed that up with 15 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high-tying 3 three-pointers in the win at Miami to open ACC play.
The 20-rebound performance against Kentucky was historic for Schieffelin and the program. It marked the most rebounds in a game by a Clemson player since Harold Jamison also grabbed 20 boards against Florida State in 1999. Schieffelin is the only player in the last 25 years to record 10+ points, 20+ rebounds and 4+ assists in a win over an AP Top 5 opponent.
On the season, Schieffelin leads the nation in rebounds per game (12.5) and total rebounds (125). He ranks third nationally in defensive rebounds per game (8.4) and eighth in offensive rebounds per game (4.1). The 6-foot-7 forward also paces the ACC in each of those rebounding categories and is second in the conference with 5 double-doubles.
With his strong play to date, Schieffelin has become just the fifth player in Clemson history to amass 700 points, 600 rebounds and 200 assists in a career, joining program greats like Horace Grant and Trevor Booker.
The ACC Player of the Week award is the first of Ian Schieffelin’s career. He and the Tigers will look to build on their momentum ,when they host Memphis on Saturday at Littlejohn Coliseum
