Balanced offense grants Clemson Tigers win over Virginia in Tony Elliott return

The Clemson Tigers added another win to their record with a 41-17 performance over the Virginia Cavaliers at Memorial Stadium.

Following a Virginia touchdown after a Cade Klubnik interception, the Tigers (6-1, 5-0 ACC) poured it on the Cavaliers, scoring 35 points in the second and third quarter to put the Wahoos at a large deficit and keep the Tigers undefeated..

While Klubnik opened with an interception on the second drive of the game, the rushing attack aided him greatly, scoring three touchdowns on the ground between running back Phil Mafah and receiver Antonio Williams.

Williams also continued to show his arm, responding from a passing touchdown a week ago to a 34-yard trick play pass to Troy Stellato to put Clemson at Virginia’s 2-yard line. Mafah would punch it in a play after for the final touchdown of Clemson’s first half, where they would go into the half up by seven.

The tailback stayed consistent throughout the win, rushing for 78 yards and two scores off of 4.3 yards per carry.

The third quarter success came with help from tight end Olsen Patt-Henry, who caught two passes for 51 yards. Both passes turned into touchdowns; a 11-yard pass from Klubnik in the red zone and then a 4th-and-1 pass to the sophomore for a 40-yard touchdown.

While the early interception may have haunted some quarterbacks, Klubnik finished on the right foot, throwing for 308 yards and three touchdowns, both to Patt-Henry. His ability to extend plays with his legs, which included a 31-yard pass to Cole Turner, allowed the team to extend drives and settle with points.

The final touchdown was a garbage time pass to T.J. Moore, who caught it perfectly in stride for a 34-yard score. The freshman led the team in receiving with 78 yards off of four receptions with the touchdown.

Troy Stellato had seven receptions for 74 yards as well, while tight end Jake Briningstool caught five balls for 38 yards. Antonio Williams had 44 receiving yards as well as passing and rushing yards.

The Tigers have now scored 40 or more points in all of their home games this season. They have scored that many points in five out of their seven games as well.

Clemson will head into the bye next week and will prepare for its next game on Nov. 2, a home matchup with the Louisville Cardinals.
