Clemson football leads Appalachian State by a score of 56-13 at halftime. Here are the thoughts:
What did we just see on offense?
The Clemson offense woke up after a slow first game against Georgia. And oh my.
The Tigers scored 35 points in the first quarter, the most in any first quarter in Clemson history. It also ties the most the team has ever scored in a quarter in program history.
The team also scored a touchdown on all seven drives in the first half.
Everyone was eating. Phil Mafah had an 83-yard touchdown score. Jake Briningstool had 17-yard and 40-yard scores. Antonio Williams kept his great performances going with a 29-yard reception to score as well.
Cade Klubnik has looked completely different than a week ago. The junior has 378 yards and seven total touchdowns, both career-highs, and it’s only halftime. The Tigers have converted on all six of their third down conversations.
There was another player who stood out early. He was very talked about a lot this week and finally got his chance……
The freshmen are showing out
A lot was said about the lack of snaps that receivers Bryant Wesco Jr. and TJ Moore saw in Week 1 against Georgia.
On the third play from scrimmage, all points were proven to be true. Wesco was the real deal, hauling in a pass from Klubnik and taking it 76 yards for the first score of the game.
He would do it again a drive later, tracking down a 52-yard pass from Klubnik to put the team inside the five yard line.
He would finish with three receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown at the break.
TJ Moore would also find success in the half as well, recording 44 yards off of three receptions. He would add in a touchdown as well, making a 33-yard catch-and-run to grow Clemson’s lead.
Linebacker Sammy Brown was also in the mix, recording three total tackles in the half.
Defense playing their part
The Clemson defense has continued to stay dominant throughout the half, holding Appalachian State to 13 points in the first 30 minutes.
No sacks, fumbles or interceptions, but the defense is continuing to give Mountaineers quarterback, Joey Aguilar, trouble. Aguilar has only complete 9-of-28 passes for 96 total yards.
The only bright spot on offense for Appalachian St. has been running back Anderson Castle, who has 70 yards off of six carries and the sole touchdown for the Mountaineers.
