Clemson soccer ties South Carolina despite Lundegard red card

Midfielder Misei Yoshizawa scored the equalizer for Clemson soccer, which proved to be enough for the Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks to tie the game after 90 minutes, with the final score being 2-2 at Stone Stadium in Columbia.

Despite being tied, the Tigers were on the back foot for the final 15 minutes due to an Adam Lundegard red card in the 75th minute. While the Tigers held strong and had their chances, the teams will both share a draw.

The game snaps a ten-game losing streak for the Gamecocks, with the Tigers remaining undefeated to begin the season.

The Gamecocks scored two unanswered goals, one immediately after Clemson opened the scoring in the 26th and 46th minute to take a lead early in the second half. The Tigers scored first, with forward Alex Meinhard getting a rebound off of a saved penalty kick to score his second goal of the series.

Yoshizawa added another in the 66th minute to tie the game, finding an open pass from midfielder Ransford Gyan to grab a deflection from a South Carolina defender and cross the goal line to score the final goal.

The Tigers had their chances, finding seven corner kick opportunities to South Carolina’s three but being unable to find the net. Gamecocks goalkeeper, Filip Versterre, would record six saves in the contest.

Six yellow cards were shown in the game, with three being to each side. Lundegard was the only one who was shown red, which marks the second Tiger in the last three years to be given a red card in the last three contests against the Gamecocks.

Clemson will be back in action against Stanford next Friday at Historic Riggs Field.
