Two Georgia Football Players Arrested Prior to 2024 Opener with Clemson

Georgia Football is no stranger to Clemson, nor are they any stranger to players running afoul of the law.

The Bulldogs’ program saw two of its key members, including a defensive starter, arrested for reckless driving earlier in the week. Redshirt freshman Bo Hughley and senior starting linebacker Smael Mondon Jr. were taken into custody and Hughley charged with failing to maintain a proper lane and reckless driving which resulted in a single vehicle accident.

Athens-Clarke County police arrested Mondon Jr. on Wednesday night on a charge of racing on highway streets.

Mondon Jr. is one of the key contributors of the Georgia defense, recording 68 tackles, five for loss, and three sacks as a junior last season. Hughley did not log a snap for the Bulldogs in 2023.

The Georgia football program has a recent history of its student-athletes driving carelessly, as Hughley and Mondon Jr.’s arrests are the third and fourth such occurrences for Bulldog players this offseason alone. There is no word yet what consequences each player will face from the program and head coach Kirby Smart, and whether each will be available for the season opener against the Tigers.

Since Smart has taken over the Bulldogs’ program, there have been 24 Bulldog players arrested or ticketed for driving violations.

In other news from Athens, Trevor Etienne, younger brother of legendary former Clemson running back Travis Etienne, had DUI charges dropped. Etienne was arrested in March on four charges, including driving under the influence, but reports have stated that a resolution was reached to drop the DUI charge.

Instead, Etienne pleaded no contest to reckless driving and entered a plea of guilty on charges of underage possession of alcohol, failure to maintain lane, and a window tint violation. As part of the reported plea, Etienne will complete 40 hours of community service, complete a risk reduction program, a substance abuse evaluation, serve 12 months’ probation, and pay almost $1,400 in fines and monthly supervision fees.

Etienne is projected to be the starting running back for Georgia this fall.
