A story of the 2023 season for Clemson was their struggles at the kicker position. Nobody could have predicted the sequence of events and the role’s importance in their last season, yet it was one of the most contentious topics around the organization.
Redshirt freshman Robert Gunn III started off poorly in the previous season, forcing Swinney to make a move, picking up former kicker Jonathan Weitz in an emergency attempt for redemption. The missed field-goal against the Florida State Seminoles on September 23, which would have given the Tigers a late lead over their ACC rivals, sparked the desperation to move on.
“I mean, Robert really struggled. Once we got to the season, he was awesome, until the lights turned on,” said Swinney on Gunn III’s performance last year.
Now, with the 2023 season at an end, Weitz’ temporary stay is over and the Tigers are working towards a more permanent solution. Coach Swinney showed his excitement and enjoyment over the current battle between now-sophomore Robert Gunn III and freshman Nolan Houser.
“It seem’s like [Gunn III] has found his confidence and he’s done really well, and Houser is right there with him. I mean, it is fun to watch.”
With Spring Practice underway and offseason work ramping up, the focus on the kicker position is high, and the competition is ramping up. Swinney is only seeing good things, as he mentioned in his recent presser.
“We finished practice with about six kicks or so, and man, they’re right there. We’re going to get better right there, one way or another, and I’m really excited about our situation at kicker.”
Such an important role is getting the work that is needed this offseason as the battle between Gunn III and Houser continues to ramp up. One thing is certain: the Tigers will have a decision to make as the season gets closer.
