Clemson Gymnastics Shines on Military Appreciation Day

The Clemson gymnastics team celebrated Military Appreciation Day at Littlejohn Coliseum in front a packed house of around 8500 tonight. They faced off against Air Force in their final home meet of the year. It was also Senior Day.

The meet started with Clemson on the vault where they started out being ranked 28th tonight.  All six ladies attacked the vault and ended up with an overall score of 49.175.  Rebecca Wells led the scoring with a 9.9 followed by Molly Arnold at 9.875.  Air Force totaled 48.925 led by McKean and Slife who had 9.875 each.

We then moved to the uneven bars, an event in which the Tigers are ranked in the top 25 this season. Eve Jackson and Trinity Webb hit 9.9. Only to be bested by Kaitlyn Deguzman’s 9.925, a career-high.  The Tigers finished with an impressive 49.4 on the bars, outscoring the Falcons 49.4 to 48.2. They ended the second rotation with a 98.575-97.525 lead.

After the uneven bars, we headed over to the Beam.  It had been Clemson’s worst event this season coming in ranked 40th in the nation.  However, tonight the Tigers owned the apparatus.  Rebecca Wells led all scores with a 9.95 and Bri Clark came right behind with a 9.925.  The only low score was the questionable 9.675 the judges handed out to Eve Jackson.  The Tigers led 148.025 to 146.4 after the third rotation.

Finally, the Tigers hit the floor to close out the night.  Once again the Tigers proved they own the floor scoring four scores of 9.9 or above.  Rebecca Wells rounded out the scoring with a 9.875.  The Tigers scored a meet rotation-high 49.575 on the floor.

The Tigers outscored Air Force 197.6 to 194.6 on the night.  Clemson was able to outscore Air Force in every event on the night.

The Tigers star all-around gymnast Rebecca Wells scored 39.5 through her four events tonight.  That total was the meet’s best.

After the event the Tigers not only recognized their Senior Kaitlin DeGuzman, who had a career high on the bars.   They also honored those of the Air Force Academy.

The gymnastics team ended the home season with an incredible 42,542 coming to Littlejohn to watch the meets.  We can expect that number to rise next season.  I am expecting great things from this program going into the postseason and even greater things in year two.
