No. 9 Clemson Baseball Claw Back With Fierce Rally to Topple UNC Greensboro

On a dreary Friday afternoon, we bore witness to a showcase of sheer resilience and heart, as the No. 9 Clemson baseball team clawed back from an early setback to clinch a thrilling 12-5 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans.

The stage was set for drama as the Spartans, brimming with intent, carved a four-run lead in the top of the second inning. It was a succession of strategic hits from Mitchell Smith, Zachary Walsh, Trey Truitt, and Jeremy Wolf, each punctuating the scoreboard and stoking the fires of an unfolding spectacle.

Clemson responded in the bottom of the second inning with back-to-back home runs. Jarren Purify unleashed a three-run homer, his second of the year, which didn’t just clear the fence but seemed indeed to clear the doubts from the Tigers’ minds. Next, Cam Cannarella stepped up and delivered a solo shot that tied the game at 4-4.

From that point onwards, the Tigers’ were as unyielding as their swings. Will Taylor scrambled home on a wild pitch to edge Clemson ahead 5-4. Then, Andrew Ciufo smacks a clutch two-run single to extend the lead! Senior Jacob Hinderleider contributed a crucial run-scoring single to conclude an eight-run outburst.

This game saw Nolan Nawrocki extending his hitting streak to ten games, backed by Hinderleider’s two-run single. The Spartans’ Caleb Cozart refused to waive the white flag, firing a two-out triple in a valiant comeback attempt. However, Ciufo’s delicate sacrifice fly and Jimmy Obertop’s searing double kept momentum firmly in the Tigers’ favor.

Clemson pitcher Rocco Reid (1-0), stepped onto the mound and threw 2.1 innings of hitless and scoreless relief work, earning him his first career victory.

On the opposite end, Spartan starter Noah Chapman (1-1) surrendered seven runs over just 1.1 innings pitched—a stark reminder of the thin line that separates triumph from tribulation in this game.

In the aftermath of a dust-settling seventh consecutive win, improving an already stalwart record to 11-1 for Clemson, and leaving UNC Greensboro at a record of 8-5.

Don’t forget to tune in for game two of the series on Saturday at 4 p.m. on ACC Network Extra!
