Valerie Cagle and Cam Cannarella are as good as it gets on the diamond.
The respective leaders of the Tigers’ softball and baseball teams, both are among the nation’s best players in their sport. In fact, it can be argued that no university in the country has a duo on the diamond as good as Valerie and Cam.
So far this season, both have been sensational. As a result, both Clemson baseball (ranked #10) and softball (ranked #X) are recognized among the best teams in the country. When you take a look at Cagle’s and Cannarella’s numbers, it is not hard to understand why.
The softball team is currently 8-2 overall and Cagle is 5-1 with an 0.95 ERA in the pitching circle. The fifth-year senior is 83-31 in her career at Clemson with a 1.57 ERA. Simply put, Cagle dominates. She is more than just a pitcher, however. She is also one of the most feared hitters in the country. Valerie is currently slashing .409 with three home runs and 14 runs driven in.
For her career, Cagle owns a .391 average with 62 home runs and 196 driven in.
On the other side of the spring sports complex, Cannarella is dazzling on the baseball diamond. The sophomore has helped lead the #10 Tigers to a 6-1 record.
The flashy outfielder from Hartsville, SC is elite at the plate and in the field. Batting, Cam is currently sporting a .517 batting average with two home runs, 10 runs batted in, and a gaudy .576 on-base percentage. In the field, he has played errorless baseball with 14 putouts in the season’s first seven games. He continues to build on a fantastic freshman season when he hit .388 with seven homers and 47 RBI.
It is safe to say, that if Valerie Cagle and Cam Cannarella continue to play at a comparable level to their current numbers, Clemson softball and baseball will continue competing with and beating the best of the best in the NCAA ranks. Both teams have the goal of winning a national championship, and if those aspirations become reality, then Cagle and Cannarella will be huge reasons why.
