Atlantic Coast Conference Approves Use of New In-game Video and Helmet Communications for Football Games in 2024

The Atlantic Coast Conference has approved the use of in-game video and helmet communications for its football teams beginning in 2024 season.

The final go-ahead is pending NCAA approval, but are steps taken by the ACC to combat sign stealing in college football, presumably spurred by the sign-pilfering scandal undertaken by the University of Michigan in which the Wolverines’ program and former head coach Jim Harbaugh were sanctioned.

The proposal was reportedly approved unanimously by ACC football coaches and will provide for the implementation of in-game video which will allow coaches and teams to quickly make adjustments to their on-field game plan. Additionally, the league has approved the use of one-way coach-to-player communication devices on the sideline and the field.

Similar technologies have been utilized in the NFL in recent years.

The ACC released a statement on February 14 that explained the rollout of the new technology pending NCAA approval:

The membership also approved the implementation of two new technology initiatives beginning with the 2024 football season, pending final approval later this month from the NCAA Football Rules Committee. Unanimously supported by ACC head football coaches, for the upcoming 2024 season ACC football teams will be provided with access to in-game video which will enhance their ability to make in-game adjustments. Additionally, ACC teams will be provided with access to coach-to-player communication devices that will allow for one-way communication between the sideline and player(s) on the field.

Statement from the ACC

This is an interesting step forward for the league, and if approved, expect other conferences to follow suit. This developing story is one to watch closely.
