Clemson – N.C. State: Gymnastics Thriller in the Littlejohn Coliseum

When No. 20 Clemson Gymnastics took to the floor, the flurry of tumbling passes and mid-air splits wasn’t just a competition; it was a celebration. Teaming with over 8,600 passionate fans, Littlejohn Coliseum became the thunderous backdrop to an exhilarating face-off against the No. 32 NC State Wolfpack on a vibrant Friday evening.

The energy was palpable as both teams brought their A-game, showcasing intricate routines and flawless execution. The crowd roared as the Tigers flipped and soared through each rotation, their confidence evident in every move. But the Wolfpack was not far behind, matching the Tigers with grace and precision.

Amidst gasps and cheers from the audience, individual athletes from both teams wowed with their skills, each vying for top scores.

It was a night to celebrate more than just athleticism; the teams showcased their prowess to honor National Girls and Women in Sports Day, joined by the supportive energy of ten other women’s programs at Clemson.

Early on, as the Tigers roared to life on the vault, and the resilient Wolfpack marshaled their strength on the uneven bars, they were neck-and-neck. Each twist, each turn, and each landing was a step closer to the title of dominance.

“Yeah I told him it’s not over yet you stay in it and let’s battle through and close this thing out strong because we’re a phenomenal floor team,” said Coach Amy Smith. “Told them let’s not let this rotation get away from us and they did that. Very proud of them.”

As the meet progressed, we saw the unrelenting Tigers claw their way back from the shadows of uncertainty. They cascaded like waterfalls of effort, scaling their personal bests on the floor — a dazzling 49.525 display that wove marvels in the fabric of gymnastic history for Clemson. Molly Arnold and Lauren Rutherford, like twin comets, ignited the night sky, each touching the heavens with their soaring 9.950 routines, the highest pinnacle reached by a Tiger thus far this season.

However, the shadows loomed larger on the beam, a domain that proved treacherous that night. The luminous spirit of the Tigers did not waver, but the numbers tell a tale of a struggle — a 47.875 mark that would be the mountain obscuring their path to victory.

“I mean we still had a whole another rotation, a whole another 6 routines to do,” said- Molly Arnold. “I mean posting season high on floor that was pretty incredible especially after a not so great rotation but I feel like we did it for our team.”

Yet, a true test of mettle is not in sustaining the storm but blossoming after it. And on the final stretch, the Tigers revealed their indomitable will to prevail. Lifting themselves, and Littlejohn, with performances that echoed the legendary spirit of the coliseum, they soared on the floor once more. When it mattered most, they delivered a numbers-defying 49.525, rousing the coliseum to the rafters.

In the end, amidst the exhilarating battle witnessed, the Wolfpack’s consistency prevailed at the summit with a 196.300, to the Tigers’ valiant 195.600.

This night, however, statistics only paint a fraction of the canvas. Behind each score is a tale of perseverance and a celebration of the unbreakable spirit that drives champions. Clemson’s gymnasts — their journey marked by debutants challenging destiny, veterans claiming accolades, and the entire squad illuminating the stage with their unison of effort.

“I think you know it’s difficult coming after you know you’re not best rotation,” said Lauren Rutherford “I think we just did what we needed to do.”

As the lights dimmed and applause softened, the Tigers’ resolve glimmered as a beacon of what’s possible, a testament to their growth. And with a glance at the horizon and fixtures to come, one message resonates: the future of gymnastics in Clemson is not just bright — it’s an unshakable, resolute force that this meet has brought to light.

The journey onward begins with its challenges — a fixture against Pitt on Feb. 9 is another clip in the Tigers’ reel of dreams to chase. But for this night, the Clemson Tigers and their gymnasts can look back seeing not what was lost in points, but what they’ve gained in experience, unity, and a shared belief, as they live up to their refrain: “All-in, all the time.”
