Clemson United Win Over West Virginia, Advances to National Championship

In an enthralling College Cup Semifinal at the Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, Ky., ninth-seeded Clemson United roared to a 1-0 victory over No. 5 West Virginia. The Tigers, now set for their sixth National Championship match in school history, owe their triumph to the striking prowess of Shawn Smart and the impenetrable defense led by Joseph Andema.

Smart’s Strike Seals the Deal

Shawn Smart’s second goal of the season proved to be the deciding factor in the match. In the 37th minute, with a stunning display of skill and teamwork, Smart and Mohamed Seye executed a perfect give-and-go maneuver. Smart controlled a high ball from Seye and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike that flew past the Mountaineers’ keeper, Jackson Lee, securing a crucial lead for the Tigers.

A Legacy of Victory

Clemson’s victory is another landmark in their illustrious history. They have previously claimed three titles, with their most recent triumph being a 2-0 victory over Washington in 2021. The Tigers have also graced the title games thrice since 2015, cementing their place as one of college football’s top teams.

A Wall Named Andema

Joseph Andema was a key figure in the Tiger’s victory, earning his fourth shutout of the NCAA Tournament. Andema’s impenetrable defense conceded only two shots on goal, demonstrating the tenacity that has earned him ten shutouts this season.

A Nail-Biting Finish

West Virginia had a glimmer of hope in the 58th minute when Marcus Caldeira fired a long-range rocket. However, the shot flew just above Andema’s outstretched hand, leaving the Mountaineers’ equalizer dreams unfulfilled.

The Tigers had a chance to double their lead in the 65th minute with Alex Meinhard’s attempt, but Lee saved it with his left foot. Despite multiple attempts by West Virginia to level the score, the Tiger’s defense remained resolute, ensuring Smart’s goal would be the game-winner.

Stay tuned for the National Championship match this Monday at 6 p.m., where the Tigers will face either Notre Dame or Oregon State. The match will be broadcast on ESPNU.
