Dabo Swinney Tabbed Chris Rumph as Clemson’s Defensive Ends Coach

Chris Rumph, who cut his teeth as a defensive coach at Clemson early in his career, has reportedly been hired to replace departed defensive ends coach Lemanski Hall on Coach Dabo Swinney’s staff.

Rumph, who coached the defensive ends at Clemson from 2006-2010, is currently the defensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings. He has also coached stints on the defensive side of the ball for the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears.

A native of St. Matthews, SC, Rumph graduated from Calhoun County High School before playing linebacker for the University of South Carolina. He was the head coach at his alma mater from 1997-01 before making the leap to college and South Carolina State University.

After a three-year tenure at Memphis from 2003-05, Rumph would spend the next five seasons coaching for the Tigers. After departing Clemson for the first time, Rumph coached successively at Alabama, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee. As a member of the Crimson Tide staff, Rumph helped the Crimson Tide defense win two BCS national championships in 2011 and 2012.

Rumph has a strong reputation of developing defensive linemen, particularly defensive ends, and will be a solid addition to Dabo Swinney’s staff.

Per reports, Rumph’s hiring is pending a Board of Trustees compensation meeting.
