Clemson’s Historic Run Comes to an End in College Cup Against Florida State

The Clemson Women’s Soccer team fell 2-0 to the Florida State Seminoles in the opening game of the College Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park this Friday. This was the third match between these two teams, with Florida State claiming victory in the previous two, including the ACC Championship where the Tigers fell 2-1 at WakeMed just three weeks ago.

Despite dominating the first half and creating numerous scoring opportunities, the Tigers were unable to find the back of the net. Midfielder Dani Davis came the closest with an attempt to slot the ball into the bottom left corner, but the FSU keeper made a diving save to keep the game at nil-nil.

Florida State, though under pressure in the first half, broke the deadlock in the 38th minute with a quick counterattack. A no-look flick over the Clemson defense left Kaitlyn Zipay open on the right side of the 18, and she fired a half volley into the right side of the net, giving the Seminoles the lead.

“We actually played quite well the first shift, probably outplayed them. But you know when you get to this level, with those moments in the game. And we didn’t respond well at a particular moment and we fell behind.”

Head Coach Eddie Radwanski.

The Tigers struggled to mount any significant offense for the remainder of the match, finishing the game with just one shot on goal. In the 53rd minute, Florida State extended their lead with another goal, this time from a breakaway chance by Jordynn Dudley.

“For me personally, I’m just incredibly proud of this group and (having the pleasure) to coach and watch them grow and develop not just as players but as people,” said Radwanski. “Losing the game, it hurts, but recognizing the incredible season and the incredible accomplishments is something that will resonate with (them). We wanted to win the game, but four teams make it here. Only one can make it out on top.”

Despite the disappointment, the loss marked the end of a historic season for the Clemson Women’s soccer team. Having achieved the second-highest number of wins (18) in program history, recording the most shutouts (13), and making their first-ever appearance in the Women’s College Cup.

“I think you got to let it sink in for a little bit. Obviously, feel all the emotions and then after that everyone takes some time off. Get away from the game, enjoy time with your family and then come back to it and that lovely game will come back to you,” said senior Megan Bornkamp who will be returning for her fifth year.

The team now knows that reaching this stage in the tournament is achievable, and they are setting their goals high for future seasons.

This is what a lot of us came here for, to play at the highest level. This is what we expect every team to accomplish, and that’s what’s gonna motivate us moving forward,” said Bornkamp.

Additionally, graduate midfielder Caroline Conti played in her 100th and final game for the Tigers today.

“At the end of the day we’ve had so much fun together and experienced so much together, so it’s something I will never forget.Caroline Conti”
