Clemson Tigers softball claimed a 2-0 victory over the Pitt Panthers to clinch the series win on Saturday afternoon at McWhorter Stadium. The win marked the Tigers’ 18th shutout of the season and the sixth ACC series win of the year. Clemson’s record now stands at 43-5 (16-4 ACC) while Pitt’s record fell to 21-21 with a 3-13 record in ACC play.
The Tigers’ defense started strong, preventing the Panthers from scoring in the first two innings. Pitt’s leadoff batters managed to get on base with a single, but Clemson’s defense quickly got three outs on both occasions. Junior Millie Thompson struck out one batter for the first out and the Tigers executed a double play to get out of the innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, Reedy Davenport drew a walk before McKenzie Clark hit a two-run homer to left field on the first pitch of her at-bat, giving Clemson a 2-0 lead. Clark’s homer was her 10th of the season and brought her RBI total to 34. Pitt made several attempts to level the score but failed to do so, and Clemson claimed the 2-0 victory.
Thompson pitched her seventh complete game of the season, striking out five and improving her record to 13-1 after earning her fifth solo shutout. Her excellent performance on the mound was instrumental in securing the win for the Tigers.
McKenzie Clark and Valerie Cagle led Clemson’s offense for the day. Clark finished the game 1-3 at bat with a home run and 2 RBI, while Cable finished the day 1-3 at bat with a double. Both players played a significant role in securing the victory for the Tigers.
Overall, Clemson’s win over Pitt was a significant step forward for the team’s season. With strong performances from Thompson, Clark, and Cagle, the Tigers are in a strong position as they continue to compete in the ACC.
Looking ahead, Clemson will conclude the weekend with a game against the Pitt Panthers on Sunday at noon at McWhorter Stadium. This match will be the seniors’ last regular-season home game, and the Tigers will be looking to sweep the Panthers.
Clemson will honor seven seniors in Reedy Davenport, Ansley Houston, Sarah Howell, Caroline Jacobsen, Kyah Keller, Madison May and Ally Miklesh.
