Clemson Softball dominated Winthrop in a shutout victory, extending their record to 41-5 and marking their 17th shutout of the season. The Tigers’ offense was led by Valerie Cagle and Caroline Jacobsen, who both tallied a hit and an RBI. Cagle, in particular, has been in sensational form, extending her RBI and hit streaks to five consecutive games.
The Tigers’ pitching was equally impressive, with Millie Thompson and Brooke McCubbin combining to keep the Winthrop offense at bay. Thompson struck out three batters in the first two innings before being replaced by McCubbin, who pitched the final five innings of the game, recording her fifth win of the season and allowing only two hits.
Cagle, Jacobsen, and JoJo Hyatt have been instrumental in the Tigers’ success this season, with Cagle leading the team in RBIs and hits, Jacobsen providing consistent hitting and excellent fielding, and Hyatt offering valuable support to the pitching staff in the outfield.
Head coach John Rittman has done an excellent job in his first year in charge, building a team that is capable of competing at the highest level. With a potent offense, outstanding pitching, and excellent coaching, the Tigers are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.
As the regular season draws to a close, Clemson will now turn its attention to a three-game series against Pitt at McWhorter Stadium, with Friday’s game scheduled for 6 p.m. and Sunday’s matchup set to be Clemson’s Senior Day. Fans of the sport will be eagerly anticipating an exciting and potentially historic few weeks of softball.
Overall, Clemson’s impressive victory over Winthrop was another display of the team’s dominance this season. With their offense firing on all cylinders, their pitching rotation keeping opposing hitters off balance, and their coaching staff leading the way, the Tigers are poised to make a deep run in the postseason.
