Sophomore Players Step Up as Offensive Line Sustains Injuries Before Spring Game

Over the past eight years, Clemson University has developed a formidable offensive line, producing a remarkable 27 All-ACC selections. This includes an impressive 11 first-team honors, highlighting the team’s consistent performance and outstanding skill. In fact, Clemson’s achievement of 27 all-conference selections by offensive linemen is the second-highest among all Power Five programs, a testament to the team’s dedication to excellence.

Moreover, Clemson’s first-team selections of offensive linemen are tied with Washington for the fourth-most in the same span. This achievement underscores the team’s commitment to nurturing and developing top-tier players, as well as its ability to produce some of the best athletes in the game.

In summary, Clemson’s impressive track record of developing and nurturing top-tier offensive linemen has made them one of the most successful teams in the Power Five conferences. Their dedication to excellence and commitment to producing top-performing athletes have set them apart from other teams and cemented their status as a true powerhouse in the sport.

Coach Thomas Austin

As the offensive line coach for Clemson in 2022, he accomplished several significant milestones. Firstly, he mentored tackle Jordan McFadden to become the 10th recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in the program’s history. McFadden’s exceptional performance also earned him a spot on the first-team All-ACC selection.

He also helped Will Putnam transition from guard to center seamlessly, and in his first season at the new position, Putnam earned third-team All-ACC recognition. This achievement is a testament to his coaching skills and the dedication of the players he mentors.

In addition, he mentored right tackle Blake Miller to Freshman All-America honors in 2022. Miller was only the third true freshman to start a season opener at offensive tackle for Clemson since 1944, joining Mitch Hyatt (2015) and Phil Prince (1944).

As the spring practice comes to an end, everyone is looking forward to the spring game scheduled for April 15, 2023. However, the offensive line is currently facing a few injuries. Blake Miller, a talented left tackle and a sophomore player, is, unfortunately, unable to participate. His position will likely be taken over by Tristan Leigh, another sophomore player. Meanwhile, John Williams, a junior will take over Leigh’s spot at the right tackle position.

Despite the setbacks, there is a silver lining as Dietrick Pennington, another sophomore, has been putting up an impressive performance during practices. As a result, Coach Austin is optimistic that Pennington will step in to replace the injured Marcus Tate as the left guard. But for right now it looks like the freshman Collin Sadler might get the start.

It is important to note that the injuries are not severe and all players are expected to make a full recovery before the first game. Nonetheless, the team is facing some challenges, and the coaching staff is working diligently to ensure that the players are well-prepared and equipped for the upcoming game.
