Andrew Mukuba Returning To Freshman Form?

Andrew Mukuba, a 6’0″ 185 lbs Safety from Austin, Texas, had a promising start to his career at Clemson in 2021. He became the first true freshman to start in a season-opener for Clemson since at least 1973 and played in all 13 games, starting in 10 of them. He made an immediate impact on the defense and recorded 54 tackles, including two for loss, a sack, nine pass breakups, and a fumble recovery. He was recognized for his exceptional performance by receiving the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors as well as Freshman All-American honors.

Entering the 2022 season, Mukuba was expected to perform at a high level due to his impressive freshman year. However, due to the lack of experience at the cornerback position, Mukuba had to use his skillset elsewhere. Unfortunately, he suffered a dislocated elbow but was able to return to play with a brace on his arm. Despite not being able to play his true position at safety, he still managed to have 53 tackles, 31 solo tackles, 22 assists, and 1 interception.

Coach Mickey Conn recently praised Mukuba’s progress during Friday’s post-practice interviews, citing his increased weight and improved footwork and technique. He also stated that he does not plan to put Mukuba at cornerback this season, allowing him to play the position he was recruited for and excelled at in his freshman year.

“He’s up 10 lbs from last year, he’s really turned it up in the weight room”

Coach Mickey Conn

Conn mentioned that Andrew is a talented young player, and it is important to keep in mind that he was still learning last year. Mickey Conn noted that Andrew has shown improvement in his man technique and footwork during the spring, which has become more fluid and fast. Coach Conn believed that Andrew lacked confidence last year due to injuries, including a hurt ankle and knee, which made it challenging for him to use his full skill set. The coach also mentioned that they plan to allow Andrew to play in his preferred position and that he has the potential to perform at a high level.

“We don’t plan to put him at corner this year I can tell you that”

Coach Mickey Conn

Looking ahead to the 2023 season, there is no doubt that Mukuba will be a key player for the Tigers. As a talented safety with impressive athleticism and instincts, he has the ability to make big plays and shut down opposing offenses. With a renewed focus on his natural position and improved technique, Mukuba is poised to have a breakout season and cement his place as one of Clemson’s top defensive players.
