On Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, the Clemson Tigers and the Winthrop Eagles faced off in a thrilling matchup. After a back-and-forth battle, Cam Cannarella came up big in the ninth inning to give the Tigers an 8-5 walk-off victory over the Eagles.
Clemson got off to a quick start when Caden Grice’s sacrifice fly in the first inning scored the game’s first run. However, the Eagles responded with three runs in the second inning, including Nicholas Badillo’s two-out, two-run homer. The Tigers fought back with a run-scoring single from Will Taylor and an RBI fielder’s choice from Blake Wright in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, Cooper Ingle extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single, and Caden Grice followed up with a two-run homer to give Clemson a 5-3 lead. But the Eagles weren’t done yet, and they tied the game in the sixth inning with McKinley Erves’ homer.
The game remained tied until the ninth inning when Jacob Jarrell led off with a walk and Benjamin Blackwell reached on a bunt single. Then, on a 1-0 count, Cam Cannarella hit a three-run homer to left-center, securing the victory for the Tigers.
Nick Clayton earned the win in relief, retiring all nine batters he faced with four strikeouts. Parker Whittle suffered the loss for the Eagles.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 13-8, while the Eagles fell to 9-13. Clemson will look to continue their momentum as they travel to face the Kennesaw State Owls on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
