Emily Poteat is not your typical college football player. As a Senior Environmental and Natural Resources major with a concentration in Conservation Biology at Clemson University, she is more often found studying in the library than on the field. However, this semester, Emily is taking on a new challenge as she tries out for punter on the Clemson Football Team.
We sat down with Emily to learn more about what inspired her to try out for a football team, her previous experience with the sport, and her advice for other women who may be interested in doing the same.
Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
A: My name is Emily Poteat, and I am a Senior Environmental and Natural Resources major with a concentration in Conservation Biology at Clemson University.
Q: What inspired you to try out for a football team?
A: I had been joking to my friends for years whenever Clemson Athletics would send out an email for walk-on tryouts for football. This year, I decided “why not?” and went for it.
Q: Do you have any previous experience with football, or any other sports?
A: I do have previous experience in the other football – soccer. In high school, I played as a defensive full back. I wasn’t afraid to defend either!
Q: What position do you feel most comfortable playing on the Clemson Football Team?
A: I feel most comfortable playing punter because I believe that my soccer skills will translate well to the position.
Q: Why did you choose Clemson for college?
A: I chose Clemson because I was born with orange blood. My family is from Abbeville, South Carolina, and I grew up coming to the football games with family. I felt that this is where I belonged, and I really value the bonds and community that I have found at Clemson.
Q: What advice would you give to other women who may be interested in trying out for football in the future?
A: The advice I would give is to try out because you can. While this is a male-dominated sport, football is a sport that is open for everyone to enjoy. Why not try out?
It’s clear that Emily Poteat is not afraid to take on new challenges, and we can’t wait to see her on the field as she tries out for punter on the Clemson Football Team. Her determination and positive attitude are an inspiration to all women who may be interested in exploring new opportunities in the world of sports.
