Comparing Clemson’s 2021 and 2022 football seasons, there are some notable changes in the statistics. In terms of opponent points per game, Clemson ranked second in the FBS in 2021 with an average of 15.8 points per game. However, in 2022, they ranked 16th with an average of 20.8 points per game. Similarly, their opponent’s yards per game increased from 313.2 (ranked 7th in 2021) to 328.8 (ranked 21st in 2022), and their opponent’s yards per play increased from 4.3 (ranked 3rd in 2021) to 4.8 (ranked 21st in 2022).
On the other hand, their opponent’s third down conversion percentage decreased from 36.13% (ranked 31st in 2021) to 33.94% (ranked 25th in 2022), and their takeaways per game increased from 1.3 (ranked 61st in 2021) to 1.6 (ranked 39th in 2022).
Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, Wes Goodwin, the Clemson defensive coordinator, emphasized the importance of doing the little things better. He acknowledged that last year, younger players were thrown into the fire with a new defense and coaching staff. However, he believes that the team has gained valuable experience and grown significantly since then.
Goodwin also mentioned a new approach for the upcoming season, including improving his teaching methods and ensuring that the entire coaching staff is on the same page. He praised the addition of Garrett Riley to the team and highlighted the leadership of players such as TJ Dougley and Wade Woodaz. Woodaz’s coverage ability and Wade’s versatility in playing both safety and Sam were also noted.
To improve the team’s tackling skills, Goodwin has implemented circuit teaching drills for open-field tackling. He now works with the defensive line to teach open-field tackling, while the offensive line coaches teach back seven-block destruction. Additionally, Goodwin predicts that Nate Wiggins could potentially become one of the best corners to ever play at Clemson.
