Clemson’s men’s basketball team faced off against Virginia on Tuesday at John Paul Jones Arena. Despite a strong effort from PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson, the Tigers fell to the Cavaliers by a score of 64-57.
Clemson’s Recent Form
Prior to the game against Virginia, Clemson had been in excellent form, scoring at least 91 points in three of their previous four games. The Tigers had a 21-9 record overall and a 13-6 record in the ACC.
Virginia’s Strong Defense
Clemson was facing the ACC’s top scoring defense in Virginia. The Cavaliers held Clemson to 41.8% shooting and just 31.8% from 3-point range. Virginia’s defense proved to be the difference maker in the game.
PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson Lead the Way for Clemson
Despite the loss, PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson put in strong performances for Clemson. Hall scored 19 points, while Tyson chipped in 17. The duo combined to go 15 of 29 from the floor.
Clemson Struggles to Find Other Scoring Options
However, Clemson struggled to find other scoring options outside of Hall and Tyson. No other Tiger had more than three buckets in the game. This lack of scoring depth proved to be costly for Clemson.
Virginia’s Shooting Struggles
Virginia struggled with their shooting as well, shooting just 40.7% from the field and making only 15 of their 22 free throws.
Clemson’s Limited Opportunities at the Free Throw Line
The Tigers had limited opportunities at the free throw line, shooting just five free throws in the game. This made it difficult for Clemson to catch up to Virginia down the stretch.
Late Comeback Efforts Fall Short
Despite trailing by as many as 14 in the second half, Clemson was able to make a late push to get within four points in the final minute. However, Virginia made five free throws in the final 31 seconds to seal the win.
Upcoming Game Against Notre Dame
Clemson will look to bounce back in their final regular season game against Notre Dame at Littlejohn Coliseum on Saturday. The Tigers will hope to get back to their winning ways and build some momentum heading into the postseason and ACC tournament play.
