Late-inning heroics lift Clemson to a hard-fought victory over Binghamton

The Clemson Tigers baseball team had a mixed day at the plate as they faced off against the Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday afternoon. After a fantastic offensive performance the previous day, the Tigers struggled to get going against Binghamton’s starting pitcher Gabe Driscoll. Driscoll pitched five innings, allowing just two hits, striking out four, and walking two.

On the mound for Clemson was Austin Gordon, who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five hits and one run, while striking out two and facing 19 batters. Willie Weiss came in for relief in the seventh inning, giving up two hits and one run, while striking out two and facing three batters. It was Cam Cannarella’s double in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference maker for Clemson, as it plated the go-ahead run and ultimately secured the Tigers’ 3-2 victory.

About Austin Gordon
“Superman catch, I mean, that’s just, that’s the athlete that he is. He might be the only one that can make that play. And, you know, luckily he was on the mound for us.”

Binghamton tried to mount a comeback in the ninth inning, scoring a run, but Clemson’s freshman pitcher Tristan Smith shut the door with two strikeouts to earn his first career save.

Willie Weiss was credited with the win for his work in the seventh and eighth innings, while Jack Collins took the loss for Binghamton. The win for Clemson was hard-fought, but ultimately well-deserved, as they continue their strong start to the season.
